Darwin Travel Guide for backpackers

Capital of Northern Australia. The city, closer to Jakarta and Singapore than any other Australian city, is small, cosmopolitan, buzzing and built on a Peninsula. The central district is around Smith Street which is a pedestrian mall.

It was completely cut off from the rest of Australia until the road to Alice Springs was surfaced and now it really rocks.

The Cullen Bay Marina is home to restaurants, cafes and very expensive boats, whilst at Fannie Bay there is a sailing club, golf club, casino and the Botanic gardens.

DAILY BUDGET in DARWIN - Work on approximately US$ 23 for a good time in this small, cosmopolitan city. This amount should cover a clean bed in a respectable hostel, sidewalk type food, some good beer, party time and a few attractions.

Fannies Bay - Check out the wallabies at Fannies Bay in the late afternoon when they come out to feed.

The Lake - Take a dip in the salt-water, jellyfish free, lake to cool off.

Pearling Exhibition - The aquarium at the Pearling Exhibition is well worth a visit. All kinds of weird and wonderful creatures from the coral reef are found here.
Add your favourite free attraction!

Smith Street Mall - Due to the close proximity to the East there are loads of food stalls serving Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Indonesian food along Smith Street Mall.

Shenannigan’s Irish Pub - 69 Mitchell Street - from hearty Irish stews to beef and Guiness pies, nightly specials and fab fish dishes, this is a good place to hang out for reasonably priced nosh and a great atmosphere.

Tim’s Surf N Turf - Asti Motel - Smith Street - No namby-pamby steaks here. Huge and juicy. Or try the garlic prawns, crocodile schnitzel (not kidding) or oysters. Real good food at real good prices.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Mitchell Street - Where it happens. Many bars and clubs with live music, dancing and partying until the early hours of the morning. BB’s is a must.

The Bourbon - Smith Street - Crazy, loud and loads of fun.

Throb - Plays the most up to date dance music. Most welcoming vibe and friendly atmosphere
