| Birthplace of Motown and with a black population of 80%, Detroit is the centre of African American culture, and has amongst other attractions the Motown Museum where Stevie Wonder first played.
With the recent car industry's upsurge, Detroit is fighting its way back to the position it held in the 1950's when it was the Motor City and top of the heap. |

DAILY BUDGET in DETROIT - Backpackers can munch down on self-prepared food and snatch zzz'z in hostels or camps for about US$50 a day, or hang for comfortably in motels or B&B's, with a few decent meals at cafes for US$100 a day, and still have some left over for sightseeing. |
Chene Park - On the Detroit River, Chene Park is one the newest in the city and has an amphitheatre that hosts free concerts.
Belle Isle Nature Centre - Found in the Belle Isle Park, with a museum of natural history, a shelter for injured wildlife, and nature trails and films, the Belle Isle Nature Centre is worth spending a couple of hours exploring.
Detroit Free Press (Plant Tour) - At 321 Lafayette, check out how newspapers are produced, from photography and writing to printing.

Small World Cafe - At 111 E Kirby St., with the most expensive dish on the menu, the Indian combo, only $6, backpackers will find nourishment and fair deals at this cafe.
Iwingo's Cafe - At 4710 Cass Ave., with a vibe that allows lingering over coffee cups while debating how to set the world to rights, and at prices that will encourage you to return, Iwingo's Cafe will become one of the backpacker's favourite hang-outs.
Fuddruckers - At 516 S. Main Street, good old American burgers, fries, and other fast foods are served at reasonable prices.

Town Pump Tavern - At 100 W. Montcalm St., dance, DJ's, and live music bring on the vibe in this chill-out spot, where the young hip crowd meet.
Rainbow Room - At 6640 E, Eight Mile Road, this strongly lesbian territory also has pretty young gays, cross-dressers, and a few completely straight fans coming to enjoy the cabaret, or dancing, with live music or DJ's playing hip-hop, rap, funk, house and techno.
Centre Street Pub - 311 E. Grand River Ave, students and sports fans cram into this underground haven where live bands rock the shop over weekends.
