Dublin Travel Guide for backpackers

Dublin's fair city is ranked one of the top European tourist destinations and although world renowned for its pubs and resultant Irish charm, offers much more than just drunken pub crawls and DT-induced Leprechauns. Today it is a city where the youth have taken charge and injected energy and vitality into an otherwise heavily traditional place.

DAILY BUDGET in DUBLIN - With meals in the region of US$4 to $-8, and accommodation about US$10 to $20, with staying in hostels, and self catering, or buying pub lunches occasionally, it is just possible to get by on US$25 a day, but it is wise to remember Ireland is an expensive country to visit and come forewarned and armed with as much extra cash as you can muster.

Phoenix Park - New York's Central Park ain't got nothin' on Phoenix Park in Dublin. It is one of the biggest city parks in the world with football and hurling grounds, cricket fields, motor race-track and a whole lot of deer… but wait! There's more… gardens, lakes and some beautiful 18th-century residences can also be found here.

Temple Bar - The 'bar' in Temple Bar is a term for a riverside walkway, not 'place of booze', although with the great number of drinking establishments in this entertainment hub one could be excused for misconstruing the name.

Trinity College - Ireland's ivy-clad and tranquil university is also home to Dublin's greatest attraction the “Book of Kells', and a great escape from the noise of the city.

Liffey Boardwalk - Running along part of the Liffey river which divides Dublin's North side from the more salubrious South, the Liffey boardwalk offers a very pleasant way to pass a while.

Beshoff's - Located at 14 Westmoreland St, with a branch at 6 O'Connell St, this is a no nonsense eatery with excellent, and cheap, fish and chips.

Cafe Irie - 11 Fownes St Lower, Temple Bar, come here for bagels and pitta bread stuffed with yummy fillings, and at a price that is easily afforded.

Gruel - 67 Dame St, although Gruel calls itself a soup kitchen, it also serves great sandwiches and salads.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Front Lounge - At 33 Parliament St, this very popular place is jam-packed over weekends with all sorts of beautiful people, and is gay-friendly.

The Chocolate Bar - At Old Harcourt Street Train Station, Harcourt St, tucked away from the crowd, in the fashionable nightclub POD, is a great spot given over to the younger set where they can enjoy what they enjoy most, and is hip, happening and hot.

Modern Green Bar - At 31 Wexford St, this student bar has DJ's most nights and is a great place for meeting new people.
