| Dunedin Travel Guide for backpackers |

| Dunedin, the capital of this region, has a Scottish character and is a place of culture and learning. With around 12000 students, pubs and cafes abound in this busy city, as do libraries, museums and galleries. The beautiful Otago Peninsula with divine scenery, rare birds and the Clutha River, once a rich source of alluvial gold, is the highlight not to be left out on your visit. Moetaki with its perfectly round boulders and Oumaru limestone is worth checking out, the stone is used in local building.
