Edinburgh Travel Guide for backpackers

This amazing city in Scotland is well beloved by its own people, and with good reason. It is set among the breathtaking beauty of extinct volcanoes and craggy outcrops, with a fairytale castle perched high above the streets of the old city. Streets so gloomy and tortuous that one can well imagine the infamous Mr. Hyde scurrying down the alleyways trying to escape the horrible fate imposed on him by Dr. Jekyll. No wonder Stevenson was inspired to base his immortal book in the medieval part of Edinburgh. Today Edinburgh is a city that blends the past with the present and offers arts festivals, dance clubs, and modern tourism.

DAILY BUDGET in EDINBURGH - Backpackers will find accommodation more easily in Scotland than in England, and generally things are not quite as expensive, however it is not cheap. With tightly budgeted meals coming at about USD $12, and lodging in the region of USD $27, it would be wise to bank on spending up to USD $72 for one decent meal a day, B&B costs, and fun money.

Old Town - Explore Edinburgh's medieval past in the Old Town, where historic buildings from the first 650 years of its existence still stand.

Holyrood Park - Close to the Old Town is a wide swathe of countryside where you can gaze from craggy heights over the panorama of black volcanic rock and changing scenery of the open landscape.

Portobello - Located to the east of Leith, Edinburgh's main port, with its upmarket restaurants and bars, is Portobello where the locals enjoy the beach in the warm weather.

Botanic Gardens - So much to see, I've been on many visits and am still finding new areas. Great for picnics or just lounging around. Look out for free exhibitions. Huge glasshouses too for those rainy days...

The Shore in Leith - Home of the Queen's Royal Yacht, Britannia. Visit Ocean Terminal shopping mall and the trendy bars and restaurants.

Kylie - The view from the Mound. Particularly amazing during the Fringe Festival or at night during December when the Christmas lights are all glittering.

The Salsa Hut - Located at 3a Albert St, the Mexican food, cheap prices, and jamming mood that fills the air along with the spicy aromas is why the young crowd crams into this funky restaurant.

The Baked Potato Shop - Located at 56 Cockburn St, this is one of the cheapest places to grab some chow in Edinburgh, and is regularly packed with a hungry but bordering on broke crowd.

Southern Cross Cafe - Perfectly located under the Edinburgh Backpackers Hostel at 963a Cockburn St, this restaurant takes effort in presenting sandwiches, entrees, and homemade pastries that are both delectable and affordable.

Chocolate Soup - This place is has great soups and sandwhiches. One's near the bus station and one is just off the Royal Mile. And you the chocolate soup (aka hot chocolate) is also delicious.

Kylie - Palmyra Pizza (22 Nicholson St, EH8 9DH) - not just a great pizza place, but a very cheap eat for Veggies - the Hummous Felafel (£2.95) is HUGE and totally addictive!

THE ZULU LOUNGE - amazing little cafe in Morningside, i go there everyday, they have a special lunch everyday, home baking, amazing mufins and hot chocolates, i love the lion Hot Chocolate, and the Divine Soups and Panini deals
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Pivo Caffe - Located at 2-6 Calton Rd, Eastern European food and beer brings in the crowd, but the laid-back mood and phat DJ's keep them there.

Cramond Inn - Located in Cramond Village, this genuine old inn serves pub meals for the hungry customer, as well as drinks.

Whistlebinkies - Located at 4-6 South Bridge, you will find live music every night of the week at this watering hole that stays open until 3am.

The Peacock Inn - Excellent pub which provides reasonably priced fresh fish dishes, arguably the best fish and chips in Edinburgh! Enormous portions - try their giant battered haddock and chips, freshly cooked to order - perfect!

The Outback - Australian themed pub with cheap cocktail menu. £7 for a pitcher. Try the Illusion

Kylie - Aspen (South Bridge), great during the day and evening! Free wi-fi, cheap food and crammed with flat-screen tvs showing music videos. Great staff too!
