France Travel Guide for backpackers

The French are known for their passion and they have a lot to be passionate about when one checks out at the land, the peeps, and glugs back some juice of the fruit… French Champagne! And then there is the Eiffel Tower, the Cote d'Azur, Paris, and Provence, a visit to France is a trip of note to a land of culture, beauty and a lifestyle others can only dream of.

Paris - This old city is the heart of France, with pavement cafes, the River Seine and sidewalk artists, and oozes romance, so be warned.

Arles - If you're into art, and anyone coming to France must surely be, then this is Van Gogh territory where you can groove to his tune, and check out the same olive groves, vineyards, and terraced brasseries he did.

Biarritz - Surf's up in Biarritz and the vibe cool in Napoleon III and his wife Eugenie's stomping grounds.

Cannes - Come to Cannes in May when the Film Festival is in town and get buzzed with champagne, wicked chicks and enough bling bling to dazzle a blind man.

Chamonix - Shalom into picture postcard scenes in the French Alps, or hike through meadows of wildflowers beneath the snowy slopes of Mont Blanc in one of the most spectacular pieces of geography in France.

DAILY BUDGET in FRANCE - The good news is student discounts are common. The bad news is, you're gonna need them. France isn't cheap, but as the saying goes, 'you get what you pay for', and it is worth scrimping and scraping to get to see this great country. If you are prepared to eat light and dine al fresco - on a bench in the park, stay in hostels and wear out a whole lot of shoe leather rather than ride, then a backpacker with smarts can get by on Us$ 50 per day, with meals at US$5-15 and lodging around US$10-35. However, if your folks can add some substance to your thinly stretched budget then for about US$100 a day you can sleep comfortable, and enjoy some of the country's world famous cuisine.

Come to France in the spring when the weather is at its best, or autumn just before the cold arrives. In May the beaches begin to fill up with sun-seeking tourists, or if skiing and playing in the snow is more your bag then try to make in winter, although the slopes are full of locals, young and old during the Christmas school holidays. Most Parisians desert the city in July to August and head for the mountains or beaches for their holidays.

In May the French hold an extravaganza of singing and dancing in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in Provence celebrating Sarah, the patron saint of gypsies. Bastille Day in July is celebrated by throwing firecrackers around, and the International Music Festival in Strasbourg is held in June.
