Frankfurt Travel Guide for backpackers

Frankfurt is the financial and commercial capital of Germany, and has had a considerable commercial clout since the 13th century. Frankfurt is the home of the German Stock Exchange as well as the European Central Bank. In 1944, Frankfurt suffered considerable damage and most of the city had to be rebuilt. Instead of rebuilding the original buildings, which were destroyed, Frankfurters opted to erect skyscrapers and earned the nickname "Mainhattan". The city's parks, gardens, original old taverns, vibrant cultural life and elegant shops provide the perfect contrast to the ultra modern architectural style of the high-rise buildings.

DAILY BUDGET in FRANKFURT - In Frankfurt, you are looking between $41 to $55 for a single room per person per night, between $61 and $83 for a double room per person per night and a dorm will set you back between $20 and $25 per person per night. Food could set you back between $8 and $27 per person, depending on what you order.

Romerberg – A beautiful street with many examples of post-modern architecture. This site was destroyed during World War II and leading architects from around the world converted some ruined medieval sites using the forms and styles of the 1980’s. On the west side is the Romer (City Hall) and on the east side is the restored half-timber houses called the Ostzeile, originally built in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Judisches Museum – A moving and historic account of the role of the German Jews in Frankfurt. The impact that the German Jews made on Frankfurt is depicted in this museum. There is a remarkable account of the lives, history and culture of the Jews and a display showing the archaeological remnants of synagogues and private homes, most of which were destroyed in World War II.

The Zeilgalerie – A shopping center at An der Hauptwache. This site boasts a spectacular view of the Frankfurt skyline. You take a glass lift up to the roof to look out over Frankfurt’s skyline, which is dominated, by skyscrapers, with several structures being beyond the 200-meter mark, which provides an interesting contrast between the old historic buildings.

Bull and Bear – Am Bore Senplatz Schillerstrasse 11 – the focal point of this fantastic bar is the shimmering circular bar that illuminates with pin light and spotlights. This facility boasts a single bar and a late night dance spot. DJ’s play house techno and trance music. The Bull and Bear offers a well-prepared menu, which includes salads, Club sandwiches, platters and a selection of grilled Angus steaks.

Solberfassje – Gross Friedberger Strasse 8 – This cramped, old-fashioned and gregarious bistro is firmly committed in maintaining its role as a beer bar and working-class restaurant whose clientele included mostly horse cart drivers delivering supplies to houses and shops in the area over a century ago.

Haus Wertheym – Fahrtar 1 – This restaurant is “Old Frankfurt” with wood panelling and antique accessories, which do make it, feel somewhat claustrophobic. This half-timbered house is half a block from the Main River on a cobble-covered street.
