| Gran Canaria Travel Guide for backpackers |

With its combination of cosmopolitan, rural and seaside attractions Gran Canaria has something for everybody. It is often called a continent in miniature because of its extremes of scenery and climate. Its landscapes change quickly from Wild West canyons to Sahara-like dunes and idyllic pine forests. While there may be snow on the mountain the resorts can be baking in the hot sunshine.
Although immensely popular with the sun and sand brigade you can get away from it all with ease as nowhere on the island is more than an hours drive away from the playgrounds of Las Palmas or Maspalomas.

DAILY BUDGET in GRAN CANARIA - Cost's here are slightly lower than the Spanish mainland. Budget travellers could manage on $40--$50 if they shared rooms at the cheapest hotels and apartments, ate at fast food joints or made their own food from choices found in the local supermarkets.
U$ 60- 100 would allow you to have more comfortable accommodation and really party.

Casa De Colon, Las Palmas - The House of Columbus dates from the 15th century, Columbus stayed there on two or three occasions en route to the New World. The house is now an atmospheric museum with paintings and artefacts relating to his journeys. There is a Museum of Fine Art on the other side of the building.
Caldera de Bandama Walk - the volcano crater is said to be the most perfectly formed in the Canary Islands. It's a short but very steep trek down to the valley floor. Anyone who is reasonably fit can do it and it's a perfect place for a picnic. The views on either side of the road are awesome.
Arucas Cathedral - is a towering neo-gothic cathedral set in the middle of a farming community. Started in 1909 it was finally completed in the late 1970's. It was built as a sign of the town's wealth which was due in no small way to the local rum industry.

McDonalds - At Playa Del Ingles if you are craving for a junk food fix you can find McDonalds next the resort beach.
El Novillo - At Precox in Las Palmas - if red meat is needed to keep up your strength for the excesses of the night, try their large portions of South American style barbecues.
Fatiga, Maspalomas - this charming oasis settlement lies in the middle of the 'Valley of a Thousand Palms. In this small village you will find a lovely little restaurant where you can while away the day in peaceful surroundings before you head back to the bright lights of Maspalomas.
