Guernsey Travel Guide for backpackers

The second largest of the Channel Islands, Guernsey can be reached in less than an hour's flying from the mainland, or a little longer on a leisurely ferry ride. It enjoys a much more temperate climate than mainland Britain and is popular with sports enthusiasts, offering many outdoor activities as well as golf and amazing water sports.

DAILY BUDGET in GUERNSEY - With the tightest of budgets a really smart, penny-pinching backpacker could get by on US$53 a day for camping or hostel accommodation and self catering, but to add a bit of a sparkle and whole lot less deprivation, then count on at least US$124 a day for comfortable crashing, some decent grub, and a few sights.

Beaches - Sporting over twenty different bays, Guernsey is without doubt the beach lover's paradise, and offers every kind of water related activity as well as long sandy stretches for those with no activity in mind except lazing in the sun.

Hauteville House - The home of Victor Hugo while in exile in in Guernsey between 1855 and 1870 can be visited in St. Peter Port, where one can gain an insight to the workings of this great man's mind.

St Peter Port - One of the 50 most historic towns of England, St Peter Port has been around for over 2000 years and as such is a living museum in its entirety.

The Bridge Cafe - In St Peter Port; Grab some great greasy grub here at good prices, but relax and don't expect finesse and elegance.

Dix Neuf - In St Peter Port, this is a laid back little brasserie with rad hot chocolate, croissants and cakes.

Valentinos Pizzeria - Near the Crown pier, this is the best place in town for a little taste of Italy.

Milanos Pizzeria & Restaurant - Has got to be the best pizza on the island, all food is authentic home made italian and reasonable priced, make sure to book always full Fri & Sat's.

The Terminal cafe - Opposite the bus Terminus in St Peter Port. Good food at reasonable prices and friendly staff.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Harbour Lights - In St Peter Port this is the place to meet the locals and get a taste of home-grown humour.

Club 54 - In St Peter Port, this club has been all zhooshed up and made pretty and is quite possibly the best club in Guernsey.

Les Folies D'Amours - In North Plantation, St Peter Port, this tiny, intimate pub has a fairy-sized dance floor (and I'm not referring to any sexual preference here), and music that just keeps on playing… great if you don't mind your personal space been violated.
