Hamburg Travel Guide for backpackers


Hamburg is the second largest port in Europe. This city is surrounded by Elbe, Alster and Bille Rivers, which are bisected with an attractive series of canals known as fleet. Two thirds of Hamburg is made up of parks, lakes and tree-lined canals and is one of the greenest cities in Germany. This incredible city has the highest percentage of millionaires in Germany.  

DAILY BUDGET in HAMBURG - In Hamburg, you are looking between $39 to $60 for a single room per person per night, between $60 and $85 for a double room per person per night and a dorm will set you back between $23 and $35 per person per night. Food could set you back between $4 and $25 per person, depending on what you order.

Fischmarkt – This is Hamburg’s main weekly event on the Altona’s waterfront. Not only do the market sell fish, but also an array of different goods, such as banana’s and huge potted plants to name a few.

Chilehaus – This ten-story structure looks like a vast landlocked ship. This building was designed by architect Fritz Schumacher and commissioned by businessman Henry Solomon who traded in saltpeter from Chile. Today this fantastic building houses modern offices.

Krameramtswohnungen – These houses are half-timber, two story dwellings with unusual twisted chimneys and a decorative brick facades. A visit inside is a must, to see what it must have been like to live in these dwellings in the 17th century.

Alten Rathaus – Borsenbrucke 10 – This restaurant is located in a carefully preserved mid-19th century building close to the mouth of the Elbe River. No fish is served here, but they have the best-grilled meats and the savory chicken and turkey are worth a try.

Old Commercial Room – Englishe Planke 10 – Best place in town for Labskaus (sailor’s hash) and if you order this meal made with devotion by the chef, you are given a numbered certificate proclaiming you are a genuine Labskaus-eater.

Fast Food – There are a number of fast food restaurants around, such as Burger King, Pizza Hut and McDonalds, where you can pick up something cheap.

Top of the Town – Marseiller Strasse 2 – This fantastic pub offers a gorgeous panoramic view of the most dynamic city in Germany. The house DJ’s play danceable music and will keep you entertained.

Bar Hamburg – Rautenbergstrasse 6 – 8 – The best DJ’s in Hamburg are too be found. Jazz, house and lounge music will keep you entertained, while you meet some of the most interesting and sexy people in Hamburg.

After shave – Spielbudenplatz 7 – The DJ’s at After Shave play funk, soul and fusion. Here the clientele is mainly for those between 20 and 30. It’s a great place to dance and meet people.
