Hammamet Travel Guide for backpackers

South of the Cap Bon peninsula, Hammamet, the Tunisian Saint Tropez, is among the best choices of Tunisia, offering a variety of sea sports, folklore, exhibitions and festivals along miles of fine sandy beaches. Watch the sun rise in the mirror of the sea while the fishermen set out in brightly painted boats. Explore the medina surrounded by its ramparts and crowned by an ancient fort overlooking the sea. Nights are a blur of midnight swims and discos. A stone's throw away is the town of Nabeul offering an authentic view of the art of pottery and ceramics, and Dar Chaabane, a village noted for its stone carvers. Tunis, a modern Mediterranean city, is only an hours drive away.

DAILY BUDGET in HAMMAMET - Currency: Tunisian Dinar. Meals can be bought for aorund: US$3-5 and you should budget about $5-10 per day for Lodging. Tunisia is not a budget buster, especially for Western visitors. It's usually possible to get a clean room for about US$5 per person, and main dishes in local restaurants are often in the US$4 range. If you're fighting to keep costs down, you can get by on around US$15 a day, but you'll have more fun with a budget of about US$25 and can live like royalty for upwards of US$40.

The Kasbah of XV - An old barracks of the Legion. The walk on the ramparts is worth the effort and offers a superb panorama on the city and the Region.

Sidi Djedidi - Near to Hammamet, is a Roman site with an amazing collection of mosaics.

Beaches - Magical sandy beaches to sit back, relax and soak up some golden sunshine.
Add your favourite free attraction!

Pavement cafes - The town overflows with a variety of pavement cafes where it is possible to find anything from fish and chips to pizza.

The Belle Vue - Close to the Medina, with a cafe-bar below. Service is good and friendly, and prices very reasonable for the quality of food and service.

Local dishes - Couscous (steamed semolina grains mixed with vegetables, fish, chicken or meat), Brik (pastry filled with egg, herbs and tuna), Chorba (thick, creamy tomato soup), and Makroudh (a syrup-soaked honey cake stuffed with dates).
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Hotels - Because nightlife is really low-key in Hammamet, it may be good to check out the hotels who invariably offer dancing and entertainment.

Bars and discos - There are many of these that cater for visitors, but they close by midnight on the whole.

Las Palmas - great food ,welcoming, value for money, lively at night

British Bar - large disco bar by night ,very popular with tourists and locals, during the day a good value for money restaurant
