| Havana Travel Guide for backpackers |

Havana is a city past its prime, but hanging in there with cheerful determination and a nightlife that grabs you and drags you into a lively frenzy of clubs, pubs, and bars.
For the more sober and serious backpacking student, if there is such an animal, the Spanish colonial architecture will enthrall. |

DAILY BUDGET in HAVANA - Cheap meals come at about US$5-10 and a room in a private home roughly US$15-25, so, although Cuba is not top of the list of cheap countries to visit it is possible to make it on about US$35 a day. |
Central Havana - Although run-down and out of step with modern development this is a fascinating part of Havana, with an old, but still functioning cigar factory, and the lively Chinatown.
Old Havana - This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to some of Havana’s finest old buildings, with churches, castles, palaces, revolutionary monuments and markets.
Castillo de San Carlos de la Cabana - Check out this gi-normous fortress in Havana, and hear the great cannon that is fired every night at nine with great ceremony.

Street Stalls - Found in various spots around Centro Habana and Vedado, the stalls are a good place to grab some pizzas or fritters... cheap and tasty.
La Paella Hostal Valencia - At Oficios no. 53 esq. Obrapía, moderately priced, and serving authentic Spanish food with aperitifs.
Club Almendares - At Calle 49c y 28a, Reparto Kohly, this venue has two restaurants, one serving pasta and thin crust pizzas for under US$5, and the more upmarket Restaurant Almendares serving Cuban cuisine from US$7 upwards per dish.

Cafe de Paris - At San Ignacio esq. Obispo, Habana Vieja, alive band gets things going nightly in this small but popular bar.
La Pampa - At Parque Maceo, Centro Habana, the hip locals crowd this Cuban club for its swing and hip-hop.
