Hobart Travel Guide for backpackers

Capital of Tasmania. The second oldest capital in Aus. this small city is surrounded by the Derwent River and Mount Wellington. The main business district is on the west side of the water on the thoroughfares of Campbell, Argyle and Harrington Streets, which slope down to the harbour.

Lovely old Georgian warehouses are still used on the waterfront and the same architecture can be seen at the Colony District of Battery Point. Salamanca Place and Battery Point are home to hundreds of yachts. In times gone by this area was home to the fishermen, whalers, sailers, shipwrights and merchants when the city was a thriving whaling station.

DAILY BUDGET in HOBART - US$ 25 should give you a good stay in this charming city with its vibrant nightlife.

Architecture - Steeped in history, there are loads of beautiful old buildings to be admired.

Cascade Brewery - Unwind at the oldest in Aus with a couple of pints.

Botanical Gardens - Wander through the impressive Botanical gardens and time magically disappears.

Fishing Frenzy - Elizabeth Street Pier - As the name suggests.

Comquat On Criterion - 10 Criterion Street - From traditional porridge and brown sugar for breakfast to a Thai beef curry for lunch, this reasonably priced cafe has it all.

Mit Zitrone - 333 Elizabeth Street - Not that cheap but the very unusual dishes make it worthwhile. Ever tried twice cooked eggs with chile-palm sugar?

Little Bali Indonesian Cafe & Takeaway - 84a Harrington St Hobart - Cheap food with a good variety for a small take away/restaurant. Meals seemed light and not so fatty.

Club Surreal - St. Ives Hotel, 86 Sandy Bay Road - For any clubber in search of a good time.

Knopwood’s - Retreat 39 Salamanca Place - built in 1829 as a Tavern and brothel and frequented by whalers – this is still a raucous place, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.

Rektango - From 5:30pm till 7:30pm every Friday night at "The Courtyard", Salamanca Place. Two bands outside with a bar for an optional gold coin donation. A great start to a Friday night. Many thanks to the local for the tip!
