Hwange Ntl Park Travel Guide for backpackers

Situated on the main road between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park is a huge natural environment for Africa’s wildlife, and here you can see all the big game. Elephant, Buffalo, and the rest of the big five, along with tall stately Giraffe and gazelles roam free, and endangered species are given protection in the 14 600 square kilometres that make up the park.

DAILY BUDGET in HWANGE NTL PARK - If you are prepared to stay at the somewhat dilapidated Game Reserve Hotel where the rooms cost about US$11 a night, as opposed to spending US$125 a night inside the camp, and take advantage of the cheap eats above, you could just possibly get by on about US$20 a day, before entrance fees.

Braaivleis - Known to everyone else around the world as a Barbeque, one of the most pleasant experiences of Africa, is to stand around the fire cooking your meat and listening to the sounds of the night in the background while getting vrot, namely off your face pissed while glugging back gallons of laughing soup.

Backyard game-viewing - Kickback, grab a can from last night’s braai, and do a spot of game-viewing from the comfort of your stoep. This is also a good way of recovering your dignity and checking out who will be on your hit list for tonight’s braai and booze-up.

Game Drives - this is actually, why you came to the park for in the first place. Take a drive around and see how many animals you can count. Also sea how many stoopid tourists are breaking the law and facing a gruesome death by not staying in their cars, and wandering around in complete ignorance of the fact that a momma lion is watching them from the covers.
Add your favourite free attraction!

Braaivleis - Buy some boerewors, a spicy local sausage without links, and chuck it on the coals, while doing all a couple of the above free attractions.

Local Staples - Try some of native specialties, such as corn on the cob roasted over an open fire and sold at the wayside.

Camp Restaurant - The restaurant in the camp will provide good value for your money, particularly from the snack menu.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Linkwasha Camp - situated in southeast Hwange National Park, this camp has its dining, pub and lounge area under thatch, and is very reminiscent of Hemingway and Bogart times.

Sinamatella Camp – this camp is considered one of the best sites, and has a restaurant and bar for after dark entertainment.

Hwange Safari Lodge – Located 13 km from Main Camp, and if you are prepared to pay the nominal membership fee of US$1,30 a day, you are welcome to enjoy the bar and restaurant.
