Isle of Wight Travel Guide for backpackers

Apart from being a good place to bank your money, The Isle of Wight is a beautiful if tiny piece of land surrounded by sparkling seas, with gorgeous sandy beaches and great natural beauty. If tackiness is your secret vice then Sandown and Shanklin will suit you down to the socks, however, if you need to ‘find your inner self' or some such crock then there are wonderful stretches of tranquillity and peace in other areas of the island.

DAILY BUDGET in ISLE OF WIGHT - If you have the mathematical genius of Einstein and the penny pinching talent of Scrooge, then you will be okay on US$53 a day with camping and self catering. However, if you really want to enjoy your break in this lovely place then look at spending about US$124 a day for comfortable accommodation and food that sticks to your ribs.

Hiking - There is a great deal to see on the Isle of Wight with its lanes and thatched cottages, historic farms and villages, and over 500 miles of trails and footpaths to explore.

Carisbrooke Castle - Charles I possibly wasn't too impressed with this castle in the centre of the Isle of Wight, as he was imprisoned there in 1647, but for the rest of us it is a cool attraction to look at and be grateful that we don't live in the times of Cromwell's Roundheads.

Sports Facilities - The Isle offers great sports activities from cycling and hiking to windsurfing, sailing and paragliding.
