| Italy Travel Guide for backpackers |

| Land of history and ancient ruins, art and architecture, Italy is also the land of la dolce vita, with fine cuisine, fine wine and a heady air of romance.
This old country has Roman ruins, medieval hill towns, and a city of God that is so fabulously rich it drips with gold. It also has a magnificent coastline with quaint villages clinging precariously to the cliff face, and blue Mediterranean waters. |

 |
Rome - There is so much to see in Rome you could spend a lifetime exploring its churches, temples, museums and fountains, and marveling at the fantastic art of Michelangelo and friends.
Assisi - Birthplace of St Francis in 1182, this walled city and its gleaming marble buildings is dominated by the enormous hill fortress, the14th-century Rocca Maggiore.
Florence - Many beautiful pieces of architecture and art grace this old city, from the magnificent Ponte Vecchio, a three tiered bridge that has homes built into it, to the gilded brilliance of Basilica di San Lorenzo.
Milan - The city of Milan is Italy's commercial, fashion, and design centre, as well as being the home of La Scala, one of the world's greatest opera houses.
Naples - Rowdy and grubby Naples enjoys life to the extreme, full of churches and old architecture, it also has the ill-fated Pompeii within spitting distance. |

DAILY BUDGET in ITALY - Italy is expensive and the bare minimum of EUR40 a day will see backpackers staying in hostels, self catering and keeping a vice grip on any other expenditure. For EUR100-150 a day it will be possible to enjoy a comfortable bed, sample Italian cuisine and visit museums and galleries. |
| Italy is entrancing in the spring months of April and May and delightful in the autumn months of October and November when the weather is pleasant and the scenery at its best. Colourful religious, cultural and historical events and happenings fill the Italian calendar, such as the flamboyant Easter processions in Taranto, Chieti and Sicily, and the pre-Easter Carnivale in Venice. |
