Johannesburg Travel Guide for backpackers

The city of Gold - eGoli - a friendly, colourful city. Johannesburg came to life when gold was discovered in 1886. By 1889 it was a large sprawling town with umpteen bars and gambling houses. Today Johannesburg is a large, sophisticated city and is the centre of South Africa's communications network. Easy access to all the major attractions of South Africa is simply possible from Johannesburg. There are some good places to see around this big city but the people make it such an interesting place. Crime is a problem, so keep all valuables out of sight.

DAILY BUDGET in JOHANNESBURG - USD50 a day should see you through for food, grog and lodgings.

Sterkfontein Caves - The Cradle of Humankind - a World Heritage Sight, where some of the oldest fossils in the world provide evidence of evolution.

Apartheid Museum - near Gold Reef City - Displays of the harrowing history of the peoples of South Africa.

Johannesburg Art Gallery - Joubert Park- not in the best part of town but here you find the best art collection in South Africa. African Art is well represented.

Horror Cafe - President Street Newtown - Vibrant nightspot, cool for Reggae and dancehall on Thursdays, and Jazz and African Music on the weekends. Decor is so groovy with horror movie memorabilia.

Bitch - Cnr Jan Smuts Ave and Hendrik Verwoerd Dr Randburg - Possibly the biggest Gay club in Johannesburg. Different vibes and music on two levels, this club is open on Saturdays.
