Jordan Travel Guide for backpackers

Land of the bible and Lawrence of Arabia, Jordan is an ancient country overflowing with history and romance. It is sad that the Middle East is in such turmoil and that it is as popular as a pork chop in a synagogue to tourists, because generally Jordan is a peaceful place with friendly, hospitable people. It is also home to one of the world's most impressive sights, the ancient city of the Nabateans, Petra.

Search all cities in Jordan

Amman - 5000 years old and still not sure how to plan a city, Amman is Jordan's capital, and is an amazingly chaotic place, but it does have some Roman ruins and cheap hotels, food stalls, and other such attractions that are of supreme importance to cash-strapped backpackers and other budget travellers.

Jerash - Having seen a lot of ruins and bits 'n pieces of Roman habitation throughout your journey, Jerash should come as a pleasant surprise, being a beautifully preserved Roman city just 50 km/31 miles north of Amman.

Madaba - Now mainly a carefully restored archaeological park, Madaba is famous for its magnificent Byzantine mosaics and the 'Madaba map' made out of two million pieces and showing the Nile, Dead Sea, and Jerusalem.

Petra - Carved into a cliff face, and disregarded for a thousand years, this amazing city was rediscovered in 1812 and is one of the most astounding sights in the entire Middle East.

Qasr al-Hallabat - Originally a Roman fort, then a palace of pleasure, Qasr al-Hallabat is worth checking out.

DAILY BUDGET in JORDAN - Accommodation in Kenya is not really budget busting if you can get by sharing toilets and showers, and works out in the range of US$4-7 a day, but for a more comfortable experience prepare to fork out about double that. Grab a traditional type meal at a local cafe or Indian restaurant for US$4 and upwards, or throw caution to the winds and blow a daily allowance of US$65 to US$130 on a safari into the wilds of Kenya and really enjoy your African experience.

Winter is bitterly cold, summer baking hot, but spring is reasonable, as is autumn. In April the Amman Dead Sea Ultra Marathon sees competitors undergoing a punishing test of endurance from the heights of Amman 900 metres above sea level, to the lowest point on Earth , the desert of southern Jordan, 400 metres below sea level. In July/August the festival of Jerash celebrates dance, music and theatre in the best preserved Roman city in the world.
