Kilimanjaro Travel Guide for backpackers

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and was formed about a million years ago by a series of volcanic movements along the Great Rift Way. The last major eruptions occurred about 200 years ago and the Volcano now lies dormant, but not extinct. Almost perfectly shaped, the volcano is truly magnificent, rising sheer from Tanzania's plains. The Rainforest in the National Park is home to elephants, buffalo, leopards and monkeys and on the nearby Great Plains you will see herds of Eland.

Some people come to Tanzania just to climb Kilimanjaro; to see the mountain is an awesome experience, climbing it is mind blowing.

DAILY BUDGET in KILIMANJARO - Climbing the mountain is not a cheap experience, even just spending time in the National Park costs about US$ 22 for a 24-hour stay. If you want to attempt the climb on the cheap it will cost at least $300 but you are more likely to spend nearer $500.However it is a once in a lifetime experience.

If you just want to take a look at the scenery and wildlife, stay in hostels and eat cheaply then a daily budget of US$40-50 is realistic.

Mount Kilimanjaro - Officially anyone over 12 may attempt the climb, in fact the youngest person to climb the mountain was an 11-year-old, while the oldest was 74. Having said that this is no easy climb and estimates of the number of people who fail in the attempt to reach the top are between 50 and 80%.

Marangu Trail - Although not the most scenic trail this is the most popular as it is the gentlest climb. Also it has a village at the start and accommodation on the way. It is an enjoyable climb albeit a muddy one as it goes through shambas growing coffee as well as lush rain forests.

Umbwe Trail - This climb is short and steep but the scenery along the route is magnificent. However don't attempt this trail unless you are an experienced climber.

YMCA Moshi - Moshi is the gateway to the Park and cheap meals can be found at the YMCA where you can join your fellow backpackers in re-living or even anticipating your adventures.

Moshi Hotel - Moshi. Try the authentic Swahili menu served here. The food is tasty and cheap.

Golden Shower - Moshi. This restaurant serves the best Indian and Chinese food around. Many climbers come here to splurge out when they have succeeded in their attempt to climb the mountain, or to console themselves if they haven't.

AMEG Lodge Kilimanjaro - I found this to be the only place in Moshi that serves great pasta and pizza dishes. The service is friendly and the atmosphere is superb, especially by the poolside. Clean, modern, and hygienic...highly reccommended!

Kindoroko Hotel - Moshi - Great roof top bar serving nice food and drink thoughout the evening, fantastic view of Mt. Kilimanjaro, try and get there in time for the sunset. Also good value for money and great place to meet fellow travellers.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Iiboru – Arusha Village This is the newest and best hotel in Arusha. It has bar with a decent selection of drinks and friendly staff. The place to go if you want a drink in pleasant and comfortable surroundings.

Outpost – Arusha Village The bar at this basic, in fact very basic hotel is popular with backpackers and the drinks are a reasonable price.
