Kuala Lumpur Travel Guide for backpackers

Kuala Lumpur, or KL as it is known, has grown from nothing to a modern, bustling city of almost two million people. Take in it's high-flying triumphs from the veiwing deck of the world's tallest building, the Petronas Towers and explore its cultural depths in the back lanes of Chinatown.

It's a modern Asian city of shiny skyscrapers, but it retains much of the local colour that has been wiped out in other Asian-boom cities. There are plenty of colonial buildings in its centre, a vibrant Chinatown with street vendors and night markets, and a bustling Little India.

DAILY BUDGET in KUALA LUMPUR - Kuala Lumpur is relatively inexpensive, you can get by on a daily budget of around US$35. To sample most of what the city has to offer and stay in better hotels, a daily budget of US$75 will be enough.

Jamek Mosque - Completed in 1909, this is Kuala Limpur's most attractive devotional building. Its pink brick walls, arched colonnades, oval cupolas and squat minarets were inspired by Moghul architecture. The main entrance is on Jalan Tun Perak, east of Merdeka Square.

Sri Maha Mariamman Temple - Located in the heart of Chinatown, this temple is Kula Lumpur's main Hindu focus. First built in 1873, it was radically renovated in the 1960s with a profusion of statues on and around the five-tiered gate tower. The temple is free and always open.

Lake Gardens - These 92-hectare manicured gardens lie west of Merdeka Square. There's plenty to keep you amused, including a butterfly park, planetarium, insect museum, walk-in aviary, orchid garden and hibiscus garden. You can also hire boats on Tasik Perdana.

Pulau Tenggol - Beautiful, untouched small island in east cost malaysia Terengganu state, real parsdise for diving & snorkelling.

Jelawang Waterfall - I have been to the highest waterfall in Malaysia several times. It is a place where I relaxed whenever I can. The journey takes around 6 hours drive from KL and another 5 hours from Singapore.

Curry House - The restaurant Curry House at Raja Chulan with just 5 minutes walking distance from the monorail station serving amazing Indian food and a very lively atmosphere to it.

Bilal Restaurant - Found at the city-centre end of Jl Ampang, this North Indian restaurant is particularly popular for its chicken and mutton curries. Great food at a great price and is highly recommended.

Lakshmi Villas - Located at Lebuh Ampang, Little India. This is the best South Indian cafe in Kuala Lumpur. The ground floor serves various delicious dosais and the first floor specializes in banana-leaf curries. A great place to sample indian cuisine.

Restoran Oversea - Found in the Central Market, Jalan Hang Kasturi. This bright-as-a-button Chinese restaurant is aimed at the mainstream tourist market, where the dishes include baby king duck and fried meekon with shredded cuttlefish.

Asian Flavours Food Court - Hit this awesome spot in the KLCC Suria (at the base of the Petronas Towers). All of the dishes and cultery are washed so there's no throwaway styrofoam containers - and no KFC or fast food burgers in this food court!

Hard Rock Cafe - Great food, electric atmosphere, friendly staff and an awesome place to sing-along with the live band that comes on at 11pm almost everyday. There is also an area selling merchandise and an outside area where the bikers usually hang out.

Bangsar - This bar is a great place to hang out, have a few drinks and meet some people. It is a good place to pass the time by 'people waching', it can get busy on the weekends.

The Backroom - With it's '80's decor, great lighting and sound equipment, and frienfly crowd of locals, this club is well worth a visit.

Zouk Club KL - This place has 4 outlets consisting of a restaurant, lounge & bar and 2 discos. Playing house, progressive and trance tunes in Zouk and old school R&B in Velvet Underground. All the best in one place.

Luna Bar - Situated at the top of the Pan Global building, the open roof lets you gaze up in awe at the KL Tower and the Twin Towers. With the stunning pool and cool ambiance, this is where the young and sophiticated crowd go.

RumJungle - Located on Jalan Ramlee right next to the Twin Towers. This Club features a Live band and has a great DJ. The Club is very open and has different areas to chill or dance.
