La Paz Travel Guide for backpackers

Once you have entered Bolivia and made your way to La Paz, only then will you truly understand the meaning of beauty, this city is majestically situated above the rest of the world. Being 12,000ft above sea level does take a bit of time to adjust too but once that is done then the adventure begins and there is no looking back. Dry desert plains surround the city and snow-capped mountains serve as the perfect backdrop.

DAILY BUDGET in LA PAZ - This is a very cost effective place to visit, and if you camp or prepare your own meals, it is even cheaper. Living on about US$25 per day is very easily done. Accommodation for budget travellers is about US$7-14 and food in the region of US$1-6. So now, there is nothing holding you back from getting another stamp on your passport

Iglesia de San Francisco - this is truly a fine piece of baroque-mestizo architecture, designed to perfection. Take note of the indigenous symbols--from masked figures to snakes, dragons, and tropical birds.

Mirador Laikakota - There is no way you can miss this huge hill because it has a big blue tower crowning it, it does however serve a purpose and that is, it makes for the best view if the entire city, well worth the visit, make sure to take your camera.

Museo Instruments Musicales de Bolivia - I personally think that this is a very interesting way to get top know music and how it all began. You will be impressed with the collection of musical instruments, which include a prehistoric one made of bone, wood, stone, and reeds.

Dumbo - This is an extremely popular restaurant and serves light dishes such as empanadas, pacumuto Dumbo (a kebab of grilled pork, chicken breast, bacon, peppers, and onions), or lomito a la paila (fillet served in a bowl of soup with potatoes and an egg). Not to mention the fact that you can get the best milkshakes around here.

Surucachi - For a pure Bolivian meal, visit this restaurant, it serves dishes such as King fish caught in the Lake Titicaca and the lunch special which is salad, soup and the main course and finally the desert and you can get all of this for about US$1.50

La Casa de los Paceros - For a quiet night out and a peaceful meal stop here, although it has some strange dishes on the menu such fish and stakes.

Yussef - A fantastic Lebanese restaurant with absolutely gorgeous dishes. I guarantee you won't be able to finish your plate, the helpings are very generous and great value for money.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Loro en su Salsa - Located at 6 de Agosto on Rosendo Gutierrez – This is your best bet for dancing and drinking, get to know how the city relaxes after the sun has set. Be prepared to do the salsa as that is the favourite dance style here.

Boccaccio - Located at - J.M. Reyes 28 in the Calacoto neighbourhood, this club rocks on Fridays and Saturdays, it is also very popular amongst the locals and has an atmosphere that makes you want to go all night.

Tetecos - Located at - The corner of Sagarnaga and Murillo – Sitting comfortably on a traditional reed mat and sipping some exotic drink out of a wooden bowl, this is the choice of the locals and tourists alike.
