| La Rochelle Travel Guide for backpackers |

| Also known as the ‘City Of Lights’. With a population of 120,000 this city is a cultural and administrative centre. Although very old, it is riddled with high-rise condos and in summer, is overrun by tourists. |
|
 |
DAILY BUDGET in LA ROCHELLE - US$47 should cover you for a few attractions, a clean bed and thoroughly good time. |
Explore - The place is steeped in history, with cobbled streets and squares, statues and museums to take in and appreciate just by strolling around. Cardinal Richelieu and his Musketeers had a big part to play in the city and reminders of those days can be found everywhere.
Yacht Basin - Then there is the yacht basin, the biggest in France. A wander around the seashore and jetty will keep you fascinated for hours, if yachts and the like are your thing.
|

Bistro Andre’ - 5 rue St. Jean - An amazing, reasonably priced menu which includes fish soup, shellfish, curried mussels and a local saltwater fish served with a chive-flavoured cream sauce.
Le Comptoir des Voyages - 22 rue St. Jean du Pe’rot - A moderately priced menu, you have a choice of seven starters, main courses and desserts. The meals consist mainly of dishes from the former French colonies.
Les Quatre Sergents - 49 rue St. Jean du-Perot - Another seafood restaurant serving good dishes at reasonable prices.
|

Le Piano Pub - 12 cour du Temple - The pub hosts regular rock concerts that keep everyone entertained.
Le Mayflower - 14 bis cour du Temple - loud, boisterous and friendly.
Music-Hall Cohiba - place du Mare’chal Foch - music and vibes from Cuba.
The General Humbert's - The only real pub in town. A proper Irish pub with enough genuine Irish memorabilia on the walls to keep you going for ages (military history, sport, pop). The wannabe-Irish owners know how to make you feel welcome!
The General Humbert - Interesting memorabilia; fantastic, friendly staff; great beers. All round really good atmosphere. Excellent for a few daytime beers or for a proper party, Irish-style, in the evenings. Go there!
General Humbert's Irish Pub - 14 rue St Nicolas, one behind the Vieux Port. Do your plannign to make sure you don't miss this one. It's like a mini-museum of Irish culture... not to mention the parties!! 5 star drinking!!
