Lausanne Travel Guide for backpackers


The small city of Lausanne is surrounded by vineyards, tiny villages and the largest freshwater lake in Europe. In Summer the lake becomes the centre of attraction, you can swim, sail, fish, waterski or just hangout on the shore and watch the world go by.Switzerlands biggest university is in Lausanne and this brings a youthful spirit and a diverse, multi-ethnic feel to the city.  

DAILY BUDGET in LAUSANNE - Grab a 2 day Laussane card (US$12) offering free transport, reduced museum entry and discounts n meals at Manora. Again Switzerland is rather expesive. Budget accommodation is around US$11-42 and budget meals US$6-12. A daily budget of about US$60 will let you enjou the sights and keep your stomach full.

Ouchy - This waterfront area has tons to keep you occupied. Rollerblading, cycling, open grassy areas to picnic or play football and frisbie or visit Lausanne's only beach just west of Ouchy.

Olympic Museum - This showcases the history of the Olympic Games. Open daily 9am-6pm, closed October to April.

Place St-Francois - The place to see and be seen in Lausanne. The square is the hub of the city with the hippest cafes, street entertainers, students anging out and even a grand church, St Francois.

L'Elephant Blanc - Situated in the city centre a stones throw from the Cathedral. A small excellent menue and dish of the day are served in this charming little bistro. Only open Monday-Friday 11am-midnight, cover charge from US$ 7.50-13.

Manora - Situated at 17 Place St-Francois. This giant food hall that seats about 400 people and serves a wide range of fantastic and budget meals is a bit of an institution in Switzerland with 10 Manoras across the country. Open daily 11am-10:30 pm, average cost US$8.

Cafe de L'Eveche - Situated at Rue Louis-Curtat 4. A popular student restaurant/cafe with unpretensious charm and serving a large variety of dishes including Swiss cheese specialities with about eight different types of fondue. Open daily 7am-midnight. Main meals US$12-24, fondues US$14-17.

Bleu Lezard - Situated at Rue Enning 10. One of the most popular bars/cafes/clubs in town. Great meals by day, a busy bar with a diverse mix of people at night and a club playing live music and various DJ's downstairs. Open Monday-Saturday 7am-1am, entrance free for club.

Au Chateau - Situated at 1 Place du Tunnel. Tasty home-brewed beers and cool funky music.

L'Amnesia Club - Situated at 9 Avenue Jacques-Dalcroze. If you want to disco this is the place for you. 1960's-1970's is played on Wednesday, 1970's on Thursdays, theme nights on Friday, 1980's and 1990 on Saturday and Latino evenings on Sunday. Admission US$6 on Friday and free on Saturday but with a one drink minimum.
