| Le Mans Travel Guide for backpackers |

Although best known for the 24 hour car race, which is held here every year in June, the town has a lot of history and interesting places to visit.
Part of the city walls date back to Gallo-Roman times and the Cathedral of St. Julien is stunningly beautiful.

DAILY BUDGET in LE MANS - For a couple of days spent in this charming town, with good food to eat, clean accommodation and, of course, a little bit of partying US$47 should do the trick. |
Automobile Museum - Take in the Automobile Museum in Grand Prix Circuit or stroll around the old town to admire the medieval architecture. If you happen to be there when The Race is on, join the throngs of people just hanging out and taking in the vibey atmosphere.
St. Julien Cathedral This cathedral must be seen for its Romano-Byzantine architecture. It is very beautiful in its simplicity.
|

Le Corail 37, Boulevard de la Gare. Next door to the train station this is the perfect place to grab a pint and have a light meal of the local cheeses, ham and bread.
The Brasserie pl. de la Republique. A great place for affordable, local food and just hanging-out.
Monoprix 30 pl. de la Republique. This supermarket will serve you well if you are doing the self-catering thing.
|

Paris Texas Cafe 21 rue du Dr. Leroy. This buzzing little bar looks like a saloon out of the Wild West.
Le Bakoua 5-rue de la Vielle Porte, feels like a beach party including calypso music and tropical drinks.
Le Select 44 pl.de la Republique. This place rocks with loud music, flashing strobe lights and bodies.
