| Lille Travel Guide for backpackers |

Is by far the largest city in the north of France Although it still suffers from high unemployment, it can be compared to Brussels and Amsterdam with its narrow streets, old houses and historic center.
The city is an important regional hub, connected with Brussels, Paris and Amsterdam by fast trains. Although not considered a prime destination, the region is worth a lookover.

DAILY BUDGET in LILLE - For some good food, a few drinks, one or two attractions and fair accommodation you should get by on US$46. |
City Centre - The centre of the city is quite small and just strolling about will give you an idea of what Lille is all about. The focal point of the city is the Grande-Place, which marks the southern boundary of the old quarter, Vieux Lille.
Window shopping - The shopping area, which extends along rue de Bethune is always packed with shoppers and the outdoor cafes add to this vibrant street life.
Strolling – Begin your walking tour at the Beffroi de Lille which will enable you to enjoy a view of the roofs of the Palais des Beaux-Arts, from the top of the tower, before enjoying the tranquillity of the small gardens surrounding the Porte de Paris.

Try Flunch – Gare Lille Flandres. This cafeteria type restaurant serves cheap and healthy French food, which can be washed down with a small bottle of wine, which will not empty the pocket.
Les Trois Brasseurs – 22, Place de la Gare, has its own microbrewery, which serves enormous jugs of beer to go with the wonderful local food, such as Flammekeuche.
La Cloche – Place due General du Gaulle. Another brasserie to try for their specialities such as rabbit with prunes, beef in beer or oysters and smoked eel.
|

L’Angle Saxo – 36 rue d’Angleterre – relaxed bar with good, cool jazz.
Bateau Ivre – 41 rue Lepelletier – Loud music ranging from house to soul. Very popular with the student population. Father Moustache – 19 rue Massena. In a street lined with bars, this is a good place to join the throng.
747 (Le) - 7, Place de Lille Tournai – A nightclub like you’ve never experienced before. Here you dance until dawn to all sorts of music in a real kit aeroplane converted into a disco.
Cafe Oz - It was a real home away from home. Australian staff and every single piece of Australian memrobilia ever invented, this location does the trick!
