Lima Travel Guide for backpackers

Lima is a boisterous, macho, relaxed and laid-back city, yet having an underlying energy, particularly in Lima Centro the colonial zone of the city, where you can buy almost anything. This is mellowed by the presence of the sea and beaches. The mix of lifestyles and peoples is a fascinating world of its own and Limeño hospitality and kindness are almost boundless.

Lima is brimming with culture and heritage, there are museums, Spanish churches and distinguished mansions in wealthy suburbs, sights that are well worth a look before you head on with your journey.

DAILY BUDGET in LIMA - Lima has a lot of good quality low-cost accommodation and restaurants and you can get by easily on a daily budget of around US$35. If you want to stay in the more luxurious hotels and sample everything Lima has to offer, a daily budget of US$80 will be more than enough.

La Casa Pilatos - Located at Jiron Ancash 390, it is now the home of the Instituto Nacional de Cultura and one of several well-restored colonial mansions in Lima. Quite a simple building it nevertheless has an attractive courtyard with an unusual stone staircase leading up from the middle of the patio.

Museo de La Inquisicion - The museum contains the original tribunal room with its beautifully carved mahogany ceiling. This was the headquarters of the Inquisition for the whole of Spanish-dominated America. Beneath the building, you can look round the dungeons and torture chambers, which contain a few gory, life-sized human models.

San Pedro - This chruch on the corner of Jiron Azangaro, was built by the Jesuits and occupied by them until their expulsion in 1767. This richly decorated colonial temple dripping with art treasures is worth a look around.

Juanito's - Facing onto the Parque Municipal on Avenida Grau, this is the most traditional of Barranco’s bars. It is small and basic and offers an excellent taste of Peru as it used to be, there is no pop music and the front bar is designated for couples only during weekend evenings.

Bar Kitsch - Located at Bolognesi 243, Barranco. A mixed straight and gay crowd come here for floral wallpaper, sequined mermaids and generally kitsch decor. Here they play disco and it is pretty crowded at weekends. There is no entry fee.

La Noche - Right at the top end of El Boulevard, Barranco, this club gets really packed at the weekends with a young crowd. There is a small entry fee when there’s live music and free jazz sessions on Monday evening. With fine decor, this is arguably the top night spot in Barranco.
