Lourdes Travel Guide for backpackers

In 1858 Bernadette Soubirous had a vision of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes and since then few non-pilgrims visit the town. Lourdes, bordering on the Pyrenees, is not a place for late nights or night owls – enjoy the day and put your head on a pillow early – it’s more of a spiritual experience than a physical one. The nearby town of Pau was where Henry IV was born and a visit to the castle should not be missed.

DAILY BUDGET in LOURDES - Not a lot to do so not a lot to spend money on. Food in your belly can costs around US$ 17 and for a decent night’s accommodation around US$ 35.

Grotto de Massabiele – The grotto that is the main attraction of Lourdes and over 4 million pilgrims visit here annually hoping for a miracle cure. Avoid the many souvenir shops – they detract from the spiritual side of your trip.

Church of St Bernadette – As the name suggests this is a church that was built where St Bernadette stood on the last day of the Virgin Mary’s apparition. As for the body of St B – it now lies in a glass coffin in the St Gildard Convent in Nevers

Pyrenees National Park – Not right in the town of Lourdes but only a stones throws away. Well worth the trip for the scenery, hiking, valleys and (non cuddly) bears.
Add your favourite free attraction!

The Local Fresh Produce Market – Splash out on nibbly bits, find a scenic spot and submit.

Taverne de Birre et Hotel d’Albret – Dare we say it – Heavenly food at a miraculous price!

Cafes - there are many around the town so shop around to get the best value for money.

L'Ardiden - High quality regional food is a must for francophiles. For those that have ethical problems with Foie Gras etc. the typical bistro fare (pizza, pasta etc.) is excellent.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

La Pompe – This is in Bayonne and the closest place to party near Lourdes. Only open on Fridays and Saturdays but can get lively around midnight.

La Luna Negra – Cafe-theatre in Bayonne. World music, blues, jazz. Smooth.

Theatre de Bayonne – Theatre situated in Bayonne. Hosts a variety of lively productions and well worth a visit even if you’re not the usual theatre-type person.
