Lugano Travel Guide for backpackers

Lying on the shore of Lake Lugano, this Swiss town has a distinct Italian flavour with sun-filled piazzas and cafes on cobblestone streets. It is great for wandering around on foot, checking out the history of the place, and people watching. Set as it is between two mountains that protect the town from the icy alpine winds, it has a perfect climate for almost the whole year and as a result a great place for outdoor activities.

DAILY BUDGET in LUGANO - Come forewarned, and forearmed with plenty of dosh, to survive in this expensive country. If you are savvy and prepared to rough it, it is possible to make out on US$30 a day by staying in hostels, or camping, and preparing your own food. If you prefer the comfort of hotels, restaurant food, and boozing it up in the casino, well, you’re on your own, because your expenses will rocket to three times as much… but, shwow, what a smokin’ time you will have.

Rubbernecking - This is such a beautiful place that if you are of that bent you could just wander and drift from one lovely scene of mountains and lake to those of magnificent old buildings, and round off the day sitting at one of the many cafes in the Piazza della Riforma.

Hiking - Grab your pack and climb the mountains of San Salvatore and Monte Bre that nudge the town on both sides.

Vico Morcote - This miniscule village remote from the bustle of tourism and tucked away high on a hillside is as picturesque as it gets, with tinkling fountains, scented camellias, and beautiful old stone houses.

Manora - Located at the piazza Dante, this department store is where you can get your basic staples if you are going the self-catering route

Migros - On Pretorio 15, this bakery has been around since Hector was a pup and sells the most divine pastries. (And chocolates)

Piazza della Riforma - In the centre of town, this square lined with cafes and eateries is where you can munch down and enjoy the passing crowd.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Casino Municipale - Piazzale Milano 1, this ritzy pleasure dome of gambling has a clientele from around the globe who play blackjack and chemin de fer, while dressed to the nines in jacket and tie, following the very strict dress code.

Bottegone del Vino - Via Magatti 1, Sample life Italian style in this old-style wine bar, where you are served by waiters in white aprons and the wine comes by the bottle or glassful.

Salsita - Via Vegezzi, This is where the crowd comes younger, sharper, and a whole lot livelier. Salsita does double time as a watering hole to the late-nighters, and Mexican eatery for those with the uncontrollable munchies.
