Madeira Travel Guide for backpackers

Considering its size you would hardly believe that this tiny island would have so much to offer. From history, arts, culture and beautiful scenery. Madeira is also sometimes called the "floating garden in the Atlantic" because of the famous natural beauty and wide variety of gardens and parks. Try some mountan tobogganing, by sliding in a wicker basket mounted on wooden runners, down the mountain or surf in the excellent conditions which attract proffesionals and tourists alike.

DAILY BUDGET in MADEIRA - Madeira also uses the Euro. The island is not a cheap place to visit and if your budget is tight you may want to stay in Portugal and only take a day trip to Madeira. Otherwise look at spending about US $73 per day for food and budget lodging.

Mercados dos Lavradores - Situated at Largo dos Lavradores. A covered market on three floors where flower growers, basket weavers, farmers and fishermen sell their wares.

The Caves of Sao Vicente - Located on the left bank of the river crossing Sao Vicente in an area called Pe de Passo. A complex of volcanic tunnels of over 1000meters long and the biggest known on Madeira Island.

Lido area in Funchal - The new coastal promenade is already known for its many tourist facilities. Lined with palm trees and bordered by beautiful botanical gardens, the promenade links the lido with the pebbled Praia Formosa beach.
