Mahon Travel Guide for backpackers

The vast natural harbour of Mahon is the capital city of the island of Menorca. Mahon or Mao, as it is known in Catalan, is the most lively place on the island with many bars and taverns in the Anden Poniente area. The island itself offers many beautiful and relatively isolated beaches where you can indulge the beach bum in you. when all the sun gets to you, visit prehistorical remains, marvel at the mismatched archiceture or enjoy the fauna and flora of the Mediterranean area.

DAILY BUDGET in MAHON - Accommodation in Mahon will probably be your biggest expense but if you stick to eating at tapas bars and drinking at the local hangouts instead of the tourisy places, you should get away with around US $48 a day. In terms of entertainment nothing beats the beach for cost cutting!

The Port - This is said to be one of the best ports in the world. In Finca de San Antonio, close to the port, Admiral Nelson and Lady Hamilton lived their famous romance.

Distilerias Xoriguer - Situated at Moll de Ponnet 91. This is actually more like a huge liquor shop but great to sample some of the famous gin.

Plaza Espana - Reached by a twisting flight of steps from the pier. There is a fish market in the mornings, as well as a general market and amazing views of the bay and port.

Nou de Copes - Situated at Placa d Espanya 9.This is a popular little music bar with a cave-like interior carved out of the old walls above the harbour.

Mambo des Part - Situated at Anden de Llevant 209. Popular local drinking haunt.

Akelarre - Situated at Moll de Ponent 41-43. A hip place with a young crowed playing ambient and jazz late into the night.

Cova Den Xoroi - This is by far the BEST bar or club you can go to in Maohn/ probably anywhere in the world due to the way it looks. It is set inside a cave on a cliff top overlooking the sea. It is quite pricey but so so so well worth it!
