| Malaysia Travel Guide for backpackers |

| Malaysia is a country with a fascinating blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous cultures and customs, health, wealth and stress-free travel. It is also a great place to visit with a partner, because, apart from its spectacular wildlife, breathtaking natural beauty, and unique cultural heritage, it is also a place where sharing accommodation reduces costs.

Kuala Lumpur - This city rocks. It has the world's tallest building, elegant colonial buildings, and remarkable natural treasures, and on top of all that nightlife that burns with energy.
Cameron Highlands - Come here to ease your sunburn after days on the beaches, or soothe the pain in your brain from last night's shindig in KL, it is pure peace with jungle walks and wild flowers, waterfalls and all things beautiful.
Georgetown - Penning Island - This is the oldest British settlement in Malaysia, and has architecture and buildings from that era, but also a strong Chinese flavour with temples, markets and theatres dedicated to their culture.
Melaka - In Melaka, Malaysia's most historic city, junks still sail the river, Chinese temples still stand, and relics of the Dutch, British and Portuguese can still be seen.
Tioman Island - Forget every other island paradise in the world and buy a one way ticket to this living fantasy. Magnificent beaches of a coral filled sea rich with brilliantly coloured marine life, jungles and high mountains, Tioman Island has it all and is waiting for you. |

DAILY BUDGET in MALAYSIA - If you don't mind staying in cheap Chinese hotels, eating from food stalls and small local restaurants, and travelling by bus, then you can get by on about US$20-25 a day. US$65 a day will get you comfort in a decent hotel, and some pretty food at reasonable restaurants, as well as taxi fare to get around. Nota Bene: Travel with a partner sharing accommodation will reduce costs. |
| The rain in November through to January generally washes out any chance of enjoying the beaches on the east coast of the Malaysian Peninsula, for the rest of the year the country is sunny, hot and humid. In May/June the Colours of Malaysia Festival is held in various towns, when all forms of performing arts celebrate the mixture of cultures in the country. June brings the Penang International Dragon Boat Festival, when magnificently decorated boats with prows made to look like fierce dragons' heads, race against each other. |
