Marrakech Travel Guide for backpackers


For festivals and open air markets, Marrakech is a city not to be missed. With ancient mosques, sultans’ palaces and elaborately decorated buildings, it also has the Place Djemaa el-Fna, an enormous square in the old city where open-air food stalls call to the hungry travellers, and snake-charmers, jugglers, and magicians are amongst the assortment of entertainers putting on mysterious and compelling performances.  

DAILY BUDGET in MARRAKECH - Backpackers can enjoy Marrakech on around US$15-20 a day, if they don’t mind camping or bedding down in hostels, with meals at a cost of around US$5-10, and accommodation in the region of US$15-25.

The souks - (market places) It takes a while to see all the merchandise on offer and tourists usually return many times before getting their fill.

Jardin Menara - Tourists are drawn to this popular picnic spot that has the High Atlas Mountains as a backdrop.

Palais Dar Si Said - (Museum of Moroccan Arts) Found in the ancient quarter with the magnificent Koutoubia mosque in the Koubba Ba’adiyn mosque complex.

Place Djemaa el-Fna - There are rows of open-air food stalls selling mouth watering food that is prepared within view of the customer, not expensive and very filling.

Restaurant Diamant Rouge - Located just off Djemaa El Fna, there is this small but lively cafe offering a range of sandwiches, salads, and cakes, with refreshing fruit juices to quench your thirst.

Patisserie des Princes - Located at 32 Rue Bab Agnaou, for fresh breads and pastries, and back room for sit-down breakfasts or coffee, tea, and ice-cream, this is a brilliant place for the hungry-but-hard-up crowd.

Hotel La Renaissance - Located on Place Abdelmoumen Ben Ali, a good place for beers the rooftop terrace bar with breathtaking views, is reached by taking the lift from the ground floor cafe.

Hotel Oasis - Located at 50 Av. Mohammed V, this hotel and bar is found by going beyond Place Abdelmoumen Ben Ali in the direction of Route de Casablanca, the bar is accessed by a door next to the hotel.

Hotel Amalay - Located on 87 Av. Mohammed V, the atmosphere here fairly is hassle-free and relaxed.
