Maui Travel Guide for backpackers

Known as the Valley Isle, Maui is the perfect little island for that holiday in the sun with magnificent scenery and an ocean filled with rainbow-hued marine life. Sandy beaches under a bright sun, exploring the 10,000-foot volcano that makes up this island and wild adventures are all part of the charm of this Hawaiian haven floating quietly in the wide Pacific Ocean.

DAILY BUDGET in MAUI - For $25 a day a backpacker could make it by camping and self-catering, but $100 a day will see you right with a private room, good restaurant food, and taking in a few of the paying attractions.

Banyan Tree - Planted in the Courthouse Square in 1873 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Lahaina's first Christian mission, the tree now stands over 50 ft tall with a massive girth that encompasses 12 major trunks, shading two thirds of an acre.

Kula Botanical Garden - Orchids, protea's, and bromeliads form part of the 5 acres of exotic garden, which is home to Hawaii's indigenous flora.

Lahaina Jodo Mission - This sacred site with a name that means ‘the hill freed from taboo', was once a refuge for Japanese immigrants in 1868, and has a 12ft high Great Buddha statue brought to Maui in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of their arrival.

Cafe des Amis - Serving healthy and delicious food that comes at a reasonable price, this cafe is a popular choice for the locals.

Pauwela Cafe - Grab some of the best food on the island, such as sandwiches, salads and muffins.

Grandma's Coffee House - Food just like Grandma made way back in 1918 is served here with such offerings as home-baked pastries, pasta, curries and sandwiches.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Cheeseburger in Paradise - On Front/Lahainaluna cnr, this is a great hangout with loud live rock pumping up the crowd from 4:30 to 11 pm each night.

Longhi's - Jazz and salsa are what usually get the crowd going at this spot, with occasional rock by passing bands.

Maui Brews - 900 Front St, DJ's or live music attract late-night revelers to this nightclub, where the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
