Melaka Travel Guide for backpackers


Melaka town grew rich by trading spices from the Moluccas in the Indonesian archipelago and textiles from Gujarat in northwest India. Much of Melaka's past remains in the city, constituting the main tourist sights. Of these, the most interesting are the ancestral homes of the Baba-Nonya community, a new racial mix also known as Peranakan that evolved from the sixteenth-century Chinese merchants who settled here and married Malay women.  

DAILY BUDGET in MELAKA - Melaka is a relatively inexpensive city to visit, a daily budget of around US$30 will be enough to have a good time while exploring what the city has to offer. If you want to live it up a little, stay at more luxurious hotels and dine at the top restaurants, you should work with a daily budget of US$85.

Maritime Museum - Found on the quayside to the south of Stadthuys, is housed in a replica of a Portuguese cargo ship that sank here in the sixteenth century. Model ships and paintings chart Melaka's maritime history.

Istana Ke Sultanan - This imposing dark timber palace on Jalan Kota is a reconstruction of the original fifteenth-century istana, complete with sharply sloping, multi-layered roofs. Inside, you'll find re-creations of scenes from Malay court life, as well as costumes and local crafts.

Muzium Rakyat - Situtated on Jalan Kota houses several displays, but its most interesting is the Museum of Enduring Beauty on the third floor, which shows the many ways in which people have sought to alter their appearance, including head deformation, dental mutilations, tattooing, scarification and foot-binding.

Glutton's Corner - This is a collection of restaurants and is the city's most popular eating area. Prices are generaly low, guaranteeing a good meal at most stalls.Bunga Raya is a popular seafood restaurant with the locals.

Ole Sayang - A moderately priced Nonya restaurant, with Peranakan decor. Daily specialities include udang goreng asam (deep-fried, tamarind-marinated prawns) and ikan goreng cili (deep-fried fish with fresh chillies).. Located on Taman Meleka Rava.

Restoran Kerala - Cheap and cheerful South Indian food in a sparkling clean establishment. Excellent banana-leaf curries as well as tandoori set meals. Also found on Taman Maleka Rava.

Pak Putra Tandoori - Cheap and very good tandoori chicken and naan breads! 56,jalan kota laksamana melaka http://www.pakputra.tk very nice food!

486 - Jalan Tengkera - A great place to eat homemade Nyonya Laksa, Popiah, Pai Tee, Mee Siam, Cendol and Cakes served and cooked within a shaded garden of an old house just beside Masjid Tengkera. It's a worthwhile find (look out for "486")

Banyan Cafe - situated at Jonker Street.Served great nyonya laksa,popiah and great lemon grass juice.

Utan Fun Pub - Located in one of Melaka's top hotels offers something for everyone: singing; dancing; music videos and pool tables. The décor is made up of animal prints and paintings, which creates a jungle party theme. This is a great place to hang out, have some fun and meet some locals.

Sparks - Found at 37-39 Jalan Melaka Raya, this cool hangout is frequented by the younger crowd and is a vibrant and hapening nightclub. There are a few sofas and coffe tables where you can relax, but most of the people usually dance to techno, rock, pop and R&B on the dance floor.

Ginza Karaoke - Here in this nine-room karaoke lounge you can sing the night away, amongst the many locals and tourists. There are coffe tables and two-seater sofas so you can relax and enjoy the singing, there is also a small dance flor if you have the urge to dance. It is located at 278 & 280 Taman Melaka, and is well worth a visit.

The Geographer's Cafe - Absolutely great cafe/bar in central Melaka. Good for a relaxing afternoon drinking beer and surfing the net. Lovely colonial building.
