Milwaukee Travel Guide for backpackers

They say that one must grab opportunity by the forelock because she is bald behind. Well Milwaukee took no chances and grabbed her instead by the short and curlies, happily snatching at the opportunity to become the beer capital of America when the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 wiped out the windy city’s brew-houses. For all that, though, there is more to Milwaukee than booze, and with its position in the basin of Lake Michigan has a great outdoor life, and this, coupled with its cultural scene and the friendliness of its people make the city a great tourist destination.

DAILY BUDGET in MILWAUKEE - Make a plan to spend at least $50 - $60 a day for bare survival in hostels or camping, and doing your own catering, or give yourself a break by taking a room in a motel, and eating at least one restaurant meal a day, for about $100 a day.

Lake Michigan Waterfront - If you don’t have the bucks to hire a boat or enjoy any of the paying attractions here, then just go fishing, or get together a bunch of buddies for a game on one of the many playing fields open to public.

Alfred L Boerner Botanical Gardens - For those who have an interest in botany, and those who just like pretty flowers, are in for a feast of flora at the eleven different gardens laid out in the grounds of the Botanical Gardens in Milwaukee.

Miller Brewing Company - Take a free guided tour through the brew house, and follow the entire process of making beer and end with sampling the product at the Miller Inn.

Fuel - 818 E. Center St., with great food, great prices, and great staff, it is no wonder this coffee house has become the coolest place to hang out.

Comet - 1947 N. Farwell Ave., Everything about this place is just dandy… if you are a vegetarian, health conscious and a non-smoker, with excellent sandwiches at a price not to be sneezed at.

Brew Bayou - Located on the corner of 14th and Wisconsin this student hangout is not only great for grub, but also a great hook-up spot.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Club Brady - 1339 E. Brady St., Reggae and rock bands get things pumping on Friday and Saturday nights here, and TV’s tuned to sports keep the barflies happy for the rest of the week.

Bar Milwaukee - 1044 N. Old World 3rd St., House and hip-hop keep the wrinklies at bay in this hangout of the young and the hip.

La Cage - 801 S. Second St., without a doubt Milwaukee’s oldest gay dance club is the best in town, and even if you are as straight as a die, you will have a great time here.
