Morocco Travel Guide for backpackers

The names of this exciting and exotic place conjure up visions of romance and mystery, Casablanca, Tangiers, and Marrakech, all whisper of intrigue and dark beauty, and are hard to resist. And no-one should. In this land of shimmering light and ancient history, art and craft is at its finest, and the open air markets are filled with magnificent rugs, delicate and intricate jewellery, and the softest leather in the world.

Casablanca Fes Marrakech Tangier - Morocco  

Rabat - A city of blue and white, Rabat is the fourth of the Imperial cities, and is a mix of modern high rise buildings and shady parks with its old town buildings dating back to the 12th century.

Casablanca - If you picture Casablanca in grainy black and white, where star-crossed lovers meet in a smoky room with a piano tinkling in the background, you are in for quite a shock. Casablanca pumps, and is huge, brash and thoroughly part of today's modern buzz. Remodeled and revamped it has imposing public buildings, wide boulevards and green parks.

Fes - The medina of Old Fez is surrounded by walls that protect one of the biggest existing medieval cities in the world, filled with history and historical buildings.

Marrakech - Famous for markets and festivals, backpackers will find this city and the centre of its life, Place Djemaa el-Fna, the perfect cheap holiday place, with the magnificent Koutoubia mosque and the Palais Dar Si Said (Museum of Moroccan Arts) adding to its attraction.

Tangier - A port of entry to fascinating Morocco, Tangier is also home to the former sultan's palace, the 17th-century Dar el-Makhzen and other interesting architecture.

DAILY BUDGET in MOROCCO - With a cheap meal coming at about US$5-10, and budget accommodation in the region of US$15-25, it would be smart to budget on a minimum of US$15-25 a day, but for a more comfortable visit, rather plan on a daily budget of about US$40-50 per day.

Winter can be cool and rainy in the north of Morocco, but the weather on the coast is fine year round, with the cooler days of October to April being the best time to visit the lowlands. Winter in the higher regions becomes extremely cold, with the Ski season from December to March. In the high season from June 15 to September 15 it is advisable to book ahead.

The Fez Sacred Music Festival is held in May/June and features artists from around the world performing different forms of music from Sufi chants to gypsy melodies from Spain. The annual Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival celebrates the haunting music of the Gnaouas and is held in Essaouira during June. The city of Marrakech puts on a 10 day festival of Popular Arts in July every year.
