Mwanza Travel Guide for backpackers

Mwanza is Tanzania's most important port on the shore of Lake Victoria. It's a lively, bustling place in a wonderful setting, lying on a peninsula that juts out into the lake and surrounded by some rocky hills. Some very impressive granite outcrops dominate the land. The road approach is spectacular, tunnelling through some of the great boulders on this route.

The lake itself is very beautiful and dotted with many islands of varying sizes.

DAILY BUDGET in MWANZA - You can get a pizza for about US$4/5 and some cheap local nosh for even less so if you are camping and living frugally allow for about US$ 20 - 25. But if you want more in the way of creature comforts, staying in middle range hotel and eating in cafe's or restaurants will set you back about US$40 - 50.

Saa Nane Island - This is a wildlife sanctuary not far from Mwanza in the lake. It's a lovely place to spend some time watching the hippos, zebra, wildebeest and various caged animals.

Bujura Sukuma Village Museum - Located about 15km form Mwanza, join the locals and take the bus out there, which is quite an experience in itself. The museum was set up by missionaries from Quebec and its fascinating displays tell the story about the culture and traditions of the local Wasukuma tribe.

Botanical Gardens - Located on the road to the airport by the lakeshore. The gardens are a bit neglected but it's still a pleasant place to visit and the location is lovely. In fact it's the perfect place to chill out for a couple of hours.

Blue Cafe - Corner of Post Street and Nyererie Road. The food here is tasty and cheap, what more could you want.

Pizzeria Kuleana - Corner of Post Street and Nyererie Road. This is the place to come if you are craving for a pizza (they are excellent here) and cappuccino. They deserve your custom as they help support the street kids.

Salma Cone - Corner of Barti Street and Nkrumah Street. An unpretentious, we mean basic here, cafe serving coffee, snacks and ice cream. The food is filling, tasty and cheap.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

New Mwanza Hotel - A pleasant and conveniently situated bar.

Deluxe Hotel - Corner of Uhuru Street and Nkrumach Street. There are several lively bars in this hotel which are popular with tourists and locals alike.

Pamba Hostel - Join your fellow backpackers in the bar here, swap tall tales, invent a few new ones and generally enjoy the lively atmosphere.

Rumours - Proper African experience, dancing with the locals to Bongo flavour music until 6am. Don't be put off by the late night porn on the tv screens (yes, I'm being serious!)
