Nairobi Travel Guide for backpackers

Nairobi, capital of Kenya, is a colourful, bustling, vibrant city. It’s one of Africa’s biggest and busiest cities, as well as being the United Nation’s fourth “World Centre”, making it East Africa’s economic and aid headquarters.

Some things that might come to your aid after an long overland trek are the welcoming smells of Wimpy, McDonalds and California Cookies, as this cosmopolitan centre prides itself on its Westernisation, right down to the dodgy massage parlours. That said, you will have no doubt you are in Africa, thanks to the manic taxi drivers, safari-sellers, vendors and markets. Nairobi has an exciting nightlife, buzzing music scene and restaurants galore.

DAILY BUDGET in NAIROBI - Nairobi is a relatively cheap city and US$35 will get you a private room, decent restaurant meals, bus and/or taxi fares. Private rooms start at about $15 and dorm rooms $12. You can get a decent meal from about $3 and taxi rides start from about $3.50. If you stay in dormitories and eat street food you will get by on less.

Nairobi National Park - Langata Road, a short bus trip from the city centre, near the airports. Go to see black rhinos and a host of other wildlife. Admission: US$23 (adults), US$10 (children)

The National Museum - Museum Hill Road, if rock art, fossils, the origins of humans and stuffed birds are your thing. It’s only a 1km walk from the city centre across the river and opposite the museum there’s a great snake park too. Admission: US$10

Karen Blixen Museum - Karen Road, in a quiet tree-lined road, this restored house and grounds has period furniture and photographs of Danish author Karen Blixen, who wrote under the name Isak Dinesen, famous for writing ‘Out of Africa’.
