Naples Travel Guide for backpackers

Naples is the capital of Campania region and indeed the whole of the south of Italy. All the historical differences between the north and south of Italy are brought into focus in this charming city. It's a city of extremes, fiercely Catholic, its streets punctuated by bright neon Madonnas cut into niches, its miraculous cults regulating the lives of the people much as they have always done.

Football is something of a religion here, and music has also played a key part in the city's identity, with its own style bound up with the city's strange, harsh dialect and the long-established presence of the US miitary.

DAILY BUDGET in NAPLES - Accommodation in Naples is a bit expensive, but you can get by on a daily budget of around US$45 and still have a good time. If you want to stay in one of the hotels and sample more of the local cuisine, a daily budget of around US$95 is recommended.

Museo Archeologico Nazionale - This museum is home to the Farnese collection of antiquities from Lazio and Campania and the best of the finds from the nearby Roman sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. This is one of the museums not to be missed when in Naples.

Duomo: The Naples cathedral - The Duomo is fantastic and huge tribute to San Gennaro, the saint who is said to have saved the city from a cholera epidemic. It is a beautiful church, unfortunatly, no photography is allowed whatsoever.

Napoli Sotteranea - Here you decend down 138 steps into the heart of the city where a guide takes you on a 1 and a half hour tour of the caverns. Learn about the way it was built, how it was used during WWII for a shelter. It is truly an architectural masterpiece given the time it was built. Tours are offered in Italian, German and English.

Limone - Limone is the best limoncello shop in Naples. You get a free tour in the factory and you can smell and taste the limoncello. The best souvenir from Naples! It is next to the Sotteranea on Piazza S. Gaetano.

accordi @ DISACCORDI Film Festival - Essay films that merit the attention of a larger public for their artistic and cultural content.

Da Michele - Tucked away off Corso Umberto I in the Forcella district, this is the most traditional of all the Naples pizzerias, offering just two varieties marinara and margherita. Don't arrive late as it is very popular and can run out of dough.

Spaghetteria - Located at Via G. Paladino 7, this restaurant offers inexpensive plates of pasta in a youthful atmosphere. It is very popular with the students from the nearby university. It also features a great-value menu turistico. This is a great place for lunch or supper.

Pizzeria Trianon - One of the oldest pizzeria's in Naples, Trianon is a favorite among the locals and tourists alike. Here you get great pizzas and very good prices, don't miss it if you are downtown by the train station and Piazza Garibaldi.

Pizzeria Trianon - I want to recommand Trianon, it is really the best pizzeria in the world!! We ate there 5 nights in a row, and it is very cheap (3 euro for a Pizza Marinara!!) an the pizza's are huge. It is in Via P. Colletta.

Virgilio Club - Found at Via Lucrezio Caro 6, just below the Parco della Rimembranza, Posillipo. This is a fun and leafy outdoor disco that gets jam-packed on summer nights. It is a great place to dance the night away into the early hours of the morning.

My Way - This funky nightclub with a cave-like dancefloor plays a range of music from salsa to house. It is found at Via Cappella Vecchia 30c, off Piazza dei Martiri, and is popular with the local student population.

Notting Hill - Located at Piazza Dante 88a, this is a non-mainstream club geared to Brit pop plus garage and drum 'n' bass, with live music on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. This is a great place to party and meet some of the younger locals.
