Newcastle Travel Guide for backpackers

Newcastle-on-Tyne is the main city of Northumbria, and although not the most beautiful spot on the map does have an advantage over other places in its cheerful, hard-working, hard-playing citizens. Situated in an area that has Hadrian's Wall running through, and wide-open stretches of moorland with fertile green wooded valleys, making it great for hiking or cycling. Bunkhouses and hostels are plentiful in this area and a backpacker should have no problem with accommodation or camping.

DAILY BUDGET in NEWCASTLE - If you are prepared to live on chip butties and very little else, unless of course you are into the venerable and ancient art of ‘scrumping' (pinching apples from someone else's orchard), and don't mind camping or crashing at a hostel, then US$40 a day should just spin out for you. However, for USD $72 a day, you can sleep comfortably at night in a B&B, and actually eat… sitting down… at a restaurant! (…and not have to wash dishes afterwards either.)

Fulwell Windmill - Built in 1808, and recently restored, the Fulwell Windmill stands out against the skyline providing a landmark and a popular and educational venue for visitors.

Hatton Gallery - The Gallery is located at The Quadrangle of the University of Newcastle, and recognised nationally for its contemporary and historical art from around the globe.

Bolam Lake County Park - This Park is open during the day throughout the year and admission is free.

Blake's coffee shop - In Eldon Square and purveyors of wicked sandwiches and cakes, Blakes is another backpackers Utopia.

Samantha's Sandwich Bar - Located in Greenmarket and selling backpacker kind of grub at ridiculously low prices, this is one place that must be flagged in your diary.

The Komal - On Stanhope St., cheap, hot, and spicy, and that is just the food. No, seriously, this is a good, no frills, eatery where the curry is excellent and the prices are low.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Huxters - Located on Northumberland road, this sports bar offers everything a starving, booze-crazy, sports mad, lonely backpacker with very little cash, could hope for.

The Tut ‘n Shive - In Princess Square, the jukebox keeps you jamming and mood is definitely swinging in this palace of cheap booze and great music.

Dobson's - Located on New Bridge Street, Dobson's is the place to get off your face monkey-drunk while the DJ's bounce the crowd. Wicked!

The Tavern - A cool, but still cheap, bar just off Northumberland Street. Good food with meal deals on every day and brilliant on match days - its got three big screens, one's the biggest in Newcastle! Enjoy!

Luckies - buy one get one free untill 4-7pm Every day, outside seating and pretty cheap all of the time. Does good food too. located just behind Northumberland street (behind lloyds tsb bank)
