| Norway Travel Guide for backpackers |

The 'Land of the Midnight Sun', Norway is a rugged, magnificent land of fjords, mountain and glaciers with long summer days and equally long nights in winter.
For the active explorer it has mountain climbing in Andalsnes, glacier hiking in Nigardsbreen, ski resorts and cross country skiing trails, and bird watching in the islands of Rost and Vaeroy. Norway is also a country with a wealth of historic sites, quaint fishing villages and attractive unpretentious cities. |

Oslo - This warm and friendly city has some fine examples of historical architecture, museums, monuments and a wealth of parkland.
Central Norway - It is here that travellers come first when they visit Norway, with its sensational countryside of soaring mountains, glaciers and spectacular fjords.
Risor - This small fishing harbour with its picturesque village and old houses is where artists hangout, but is also a summer port of call for the yachting fraternity of Norway.
Tromso - Winter skiing and summer fun with street music, pubs and plenty of cultural activity makes Tromso a lively destination for those who crave a bit of cheer along with their beer.
Hammerfest - The northernmost town in the world, or so it claims, Hammerfest is a great place to see the flames of colour and light that flash across the skies in the fantastic display nature puts on and we call the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. |

DAILY BUDGET in NORWAY - Norway is not really cheap, but if you camp, cook your own chow, and not go screaming bonkers on traveling and sightseeing you might, just possibly, maybe, get by on US$21 a day. For US$35 a day hostel life becomes an option, with self catering and cheap restaurants to ring the changes and US$56 - 60 a day will get you a small hotel with breakfast, and a few restaurant meals, but remember all other expenses come on top of that, such as entertainment and transport. |
 |
May to September is the best time to visit this beautiful land, unless you want to see the Aurora Borealis, which reveals itself in the dead of winter. Summer sees the sun reluctant to retreat and the days are long.
On the 23 June Midsummer's Eve is celebrated with bonfires on the beach, and the biggest day of the year comes in May, when Constitution Day is celebrated by folk dressing in traditional costume and playing in the streets. Easter celebrations bring out the Sami people who hold reindeer races, concerts and traditional chanting. |
