| Odense Travel Guide for backpackers |

Odense is Denmark's third city and lies on the island of Funen, better known as "The Garden of Denmark" because of its neat lawn-like fields and the huge amount of fruit and veg grown here.
It's a pleasant provincial town with an old centre, fine museums and a cracking nightlife. It is also the birthplace of Hans Christian Anderson - you remember, all those books your mum and dad read to you when you were knee-high to a grasshopper.

DAILY BUDGET in ODENSE - A daily budget of $25-30 would give you both accommodation and 3 meals each day. If you want to eat and sleep upmarket then you would need an extra $30-50. Always remember Denmark is quite a pricey country - they tax everything you can think of. |
 |
Hans Christian Anderson Museum - found at Hans Jensen Street 37-45. It is where the writer was born in 1805. The museum is stuffed with items of his - old school reports, early notes and manuscripts of his books, pictures from his tales and bits and pieces of what he collected on his travels.
Skt. Knud's Domkirke - near Munkemollestreet. It's crypt holds the most unusual and ancient finds of Denmark - the skeleton of Knud II slain in 1086 by farmers 'cos his taxes were too high. Great pure Gothic Church architecture here, the only one in Denmark.
Funen Village - found at Sejerskovvej 20. It's an open-air museum of a reconstructed 19th century village; in summer some old trades are revived in the old workshops and crafthouses and it's all free too. Great village-brewed beer - handed out free on special occasions. You should find out when these occasions are!
|

Pizzeria Ristorante Italiano - located at Vesterbrogade 9. It's one of the oldest and best pizza houses in Odense with very reasonably-priced nosh.
Birdy's Cafe - You'll find this at Norregade 21. Great Mexican grub here and you can swill it down with loads of Carlsen Lager.
Eventyr - located at Overgade 18. The sarnies are very, very good here, loads of fillings and some scrumptious pastries (Danish of course) and strong coffee.
|

Carlsen's Kvarter - found on Laessogade. It's an Irish pub, serving a fine selection of beers (obviously Guiness is on the list). The pub nosh is very good and inexpensive.
Cuckoo's Nest - Brandts Passage; it's a favourite place for drinks or a light snack before moving around the corner to.....
Cotton Club - located in Pantheon 5c. You can drink, eat and swing to blues, rock and jazz until early morning. Good prices for both booze and nosh.
Den Smagloese Cafe - Excellent place - cheap - consciously tacky decor
