Panama Travel Guide for backpackers

While Panama is known mostly for its famous canal, it's also without a doubt a real tropical paradise for natures lovers and outdoors adventurers. This overlooked country offers pristine beaches, cloud forests, rain forests, 1500 species of trees over 900 species of birds, and over 7000 vascular plants.

Panama City        

Panama City – This thriving modern city is the centre of commerce and trade, but also has reminders of the past in Casco Antiguo, the colonial part of the city where yesterday’s grandeur is gently decaying in the sun.

Boquete – Set in unspoiled natural surroundings, Boquete is a small town snuggled a valley where the flowers, citrus fruits, and coffee are the main industries

Isla Taboga – Just twenty miles from Panama City, this picturesque and historical island, known as the ‘Island of Flowers’, is home to huge colonies of brown pelicans, and is where the locals go for a little R and R.

Panama Canal – This marvel of man’s ingenuity and engineering skill is one of the most important waterways of the world, allowing passage for massive ocean-going vessels to squeeze through on their to the great oceans.

National Parks – Almost deserted, apart from the teeming wildlife, the many reserves and parks in the country offer nature as it should be seen

DAILY BUDGET in PANAMA - Panama is not the cheapest destination of Central America, and backpackers will find that a room and three meals a day will come at about US$20 to US$30 per day,

From the middle of December to April, which is Panama’s dry season, is the best time for tourists, as the rainy season brings uncomfortable humidity and oppressive heat.

Carnaval comes to Panama City and the Península de Azuero on Ash Wednesday every year and is one of the biggest celebrations around the globe. In October, the Festival of the Black Christ is celebrated with a parade through Portobelo of the famous statue of the black Christ, attracting pilgrims from every corner of the country.
