| Penang Travel Guide for backpackers |

Penang situated 370 km from Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia's north-western coast, and consists of a state and an island. Everything of interest is on Penang Island, Pulau Penang, it is a large island which is connected to the mainland by a bridge and round-the-clock ferry services from Butterworth.
The island's captial and Malaysia's second-largest city is often referred to as 'Penang'. You can make day-trips from Georgetown to the island's north-coast beaches of Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Bungah. |

DAILY BUDGET in PENANG - Penang is an affordable destination, with a lot of bargains with good quality. A daily budget of about US$35 will be enough for pretty much everything you need to have a good time and experience the city. If you want more luxurious accommodation, wine and dine at top restaurants, you should budget around US$75 per day. |

Kek Lok Si Temple- It is the largest Budhist temple in south-east Asia, and is dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy. Behind the temple you can find a bronze statute of the Goddess. It's a beautiful place that portrays Budhist culture.
Fort Cornwallis - This fort was built on the site where Capt. Francis Light, the founder of Penang, first landed in 1786. Shaped like a star, the only buildings still standing are: the outer walls; a gunpowder magazine and a small Christian chapel. The magazine houses an exhibit of old photos and historical accounts of the old fort.
The Butterfly Farm - There are many different species of butterflies, some of them very large and look as though they are dangling on peices of string as they dance and float around you. There are also other insects and reptiles at the farm, you can get a chance to hold a rare Gecko.

Sin Kong Cheong - This coffe shop on Carnarvon, is a great place to sample some of Penang's cuisine at good prices. The Koay Teow Th’ng soup is highly recommended, this is a great place for breakfast.
Jooi Hooi Cafe - This small café in Penang road serves a range of cheap hawker food and is very popular with the locals. Try the Assam Laksa, a Peranakan-influenced soup dish.
Mt Erskine Hawker Centre - This centre is full of hawker stalls selling a whole range of traditional dishes at good prices. They are popular with both the locals and tourists. Some dishes to try out are: Hokkien Mee; Ice Kacang; Lok-Lok and Char Koay Teow .

Reggae Club - Found on Lebuh Chulia this club is a popular tourist hangout, and serves you western and local cuisine. It’s a good place to relax and listen to the raggae vibes while enjoying a drink and mixing with the local Rastas.
20 Leith Street - This bar is named after the address where it can be found and has lots of parking space, food stalls and an outdoor beer garden. The bar is inside the charming 1931 colonial mansion, a DJ plays music from 9pm daily and there is a small dance floor.
Lush - Found in Penang road, Lush is a House and Trance club that really gets the crowd's pumping and dancing. Wednesday nights are the Lush Ladies Night, which are very popular.
