Philadelphia Travel Guide for backpackers

This city of brotherly love is really a friendly place where people prefer to live and seldom move away from in search of greener pastures. With some of the finest dining in America, beautiful old colonial houses, and more than 9800 acres of parkland it does have great appeal for a visitor looking for exploration and entertainment. Adding to its attraction are the casino’s and beaches of Atlantic city only ninety minutes from the city, as well as the Revolutionary War sites of Valley Forge and Brandywine, and it becomes the perfect destination.

DAILY BUDGET in PHILADELPHIA - If you are a happy camper and don’t mind doing your own cooking, or staying in hostels, then $50 should see you through. However, if you yearn for the better things in life, like a comfortable bed, and restaurant meals, and wouldn’t mind checking out a few of the paying sights, then depend on spending in the region of $100 a day.

Rodin Museum - Benjamin Franklin Pkwy., There are 129 sculptures here by a master of the art who was no respecter of persons and who sculpted his models as they were seen by him, warts and all. From a powerful strutting nude of Balzac to the sad and once beautiful helmet maker’s wife who gazes at her time-ravaged body, Rodin’s craft will never cease to enthrall.

Christ Church - 2nd St. 1/2 block north of Market St., If you have wondered what goes on inside a church……check out this beautiful place with gleaming spire and grassy park.

Masonic Temple - 1 N. Broad St., if you, like the rest of the world, wonder what the hell goes on in the Freemasons life, then check out this amazing place where they do their thing in the seven lodge halls, all built in different architectural styles.

Geno’s - 1219 S. 9th St., With stiff competition from its neighbor ‘Pat’s’ next door, Geno has come up with a winning combination of good food and great prices.

Beau Monde - 624 S. 6th St., Crepes, savoury or sweet, are a great way of filling the bottomless pit from a bottomed out wallet, at prices that start form as little as $2,75.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Quincy’s - City Line Ave. This laid-back and elegant place has backgammon tables, and dancing to live bands, as well as a great happy hour with groaning buffet tables.

XandO – 325 Chestnut St., There are seven of these cafes in Philly that serve coffee by day, but become full on bars by night, with music hyping up the crowd.

12TH Air Command – 254 S. 12th St., Gays and guys gather here in droves for the Italian cuisine, lounge bar and game room, and the bar and disco upstairs.
