Philippines Travel Guide for backpackers

Typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and floods, are all part of natures tantrums and she throws them constantly like a great spoiled brat in this part of the world. The people then add their own special touches to the islands with humongous garbage landslides and an intense military drive against Muslim insurgents. But, hey, nowhere is perfect.

Actually, having painted a picture of such dire danger that most travellers will run screaming from it, the truth is that most of the Philippines are essential laidback, relaxed, perfectly stable, and peopled by a friendly, cheerful folk who will go out of their way to make you welcome.

Manila

Manila - Almost overpoweringly alive and filled with a vital energy Manila is a city that many will only use a stopover to other more tranquil destinations, but it has some great attractions for those who care to explore it. Historic buildings, teeming, colourful markets, and excellent museums are all there to be enjoyed and appreciated.

Banaue - About three thousand years ago, the Ifugao people carved out spectacular rice terraces from the mountainsides. Reaching an altitude of 4920 ft, these terraces create a magnificent stairway seemingly to the stars.

Boracay Beaches - Great stretches of white sand have made these beaches famous throughout the world and attracted tourists from every corner.

Cebu City - This is where Magellan erected a cross and Christianity was born in the Philippines.

Unexplored Islands - There are seven thousand islands in the Philippines, and five thousand of them are uninhabited and still have to be explored.

DAILY BUDGET in PHILIPPINES - With the fluctuation of the Philippines economy, any budget could be dramatically flucked up, so to speak, by changing values, so take all averages here with due consideration. Generally, you could get by on cheap meals with other bottom-feeders at about US$2-3, and entry-level lodging at its cheapest, will hit you for about US$10-30. If all this sounds just too appalling for your sensitive soul, then consider US$3-5 for decent meals, and US$30-100 for accommodation that offers some comfort and style.

If you are a storm-chaser, this great destination will satisfy your deepest need. However, if, like the rest of the sane world, you would prefer to miss the typhoons it is best to visit the Philippines from September to May. January and May bring with them colourful festivals, and March and April is the time when the rice terraces are at their best. Mardi Gras, Filipino-style, known as Ati-Atihan comes to town in a three-day celebration in Kalibo during January.
