Phoenix Travel Guide for backpackers

It took just over a hundred years for Phoenix to reach the heights of urban mayhem from being a tiny farming village, and what was once a peaceful rural paradise is today a booming, fast paced and hectic city. Shopping malls rule and life beats to the rhythm of cash registers ringing out the profit of the day. Bars, pubs and discos fill the night with neon brilliance, while day brings the sun shining hard and bright and people snatch at its energy to live every moment to the fullest.

DAILY BUDGET in PHOENIX - If you don’t mind staying in hostels or camping, and doing your own catering, then it is just possible to sqqqqqueak by on $50 a day. If, however, you are a gently bred soul and long for the luxury you left behind, then you won’t be happy here, not even if you spend $100 a day on a motel room, restaurant food, and a few entrance fees, but having said that if this doesn’t sound like fun then why the hell are you backpacking?

Papago Park - Take a gentle hike through this park that is home to the Phoenix Zoo, Desert Botanical Garden, and the Hole in the Rock, it may seem a long way to come to check out a hole in a rock, but there are rocks with holes, and then there are Rocks with Holes!

Camelback Mountain - The Echo Canyon Recreation Area offers hiking for both beginners and those who know what they are doing.

Encanto Park and Recreation Area – Enjoy a respite from the heat of the day and take a dip in the pool at the local park.

Lue Adobe Grille - 144 N. Country Club Dr. Although it hasn’t paid much attention to appearance this New Mexican-style restaurant serves great southwestern food at very reasonable prices.

Los Dos Molinos - 8646 S. Central Ave. For fire in the hole kind of food, nowhere beats this place, but there are a few dishes for the less courageous of diners, with main courses starting at about $3.50.

Authors Cafe - 4014 N. Goldwater Blvd. no. 104. Come to this little eatery for sandwiches and salads, but stay for their divine desserts.
Add your favourite cheap eat!

Cajun House - 7117 E. Third Ave. With a humongous interior decorated as a New Orleans Street scene, this is the fun place to be.

Axis/Radius - 7340 E. Indian Plaza. This is a sizzling dance club and a great hook-up spot for singles. It is also the new ‘in’ place for celebs.

Alice Cooper’stown - 101 E. Jackson St. For sports and rock there surely can be no better place than one run by Alice Cooper.
