Pisa Travel Guide for backpackers

Pisa has always been known for one thing, the Leaning Tower, which serves around the world as a shorthand image of Italy. This freakishly beautiful building is only one part of Pisa's breathtaking Campo dei Miracoli, or Field of Miracles, where the Duomo, Baptistry and Camposanto complete a dazzling architectural ensemble, which belong to Pisa's "Golden Age".

Add on to the rich historical sites, the friendly locals and yearly events, like the Gioco del Ponte, the Regata di San Ranieri and the Regata delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare, as well as concerts at the Teatro Comunale Verdi, you've got a city well worth a visit.

DAILY BUDGET in PISA - You can get by on a daily budget of around US$45, if you scrimp and scrape a little, but still having a good time. If you want to really experience everything the city has to offer and stay in more upper range accommodation, a daily budget of around US$95 should be what you work with.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Campanile) - This one of the most famous landmarks in Italy. Building of the tower began in 1173 and while building the third gallery, it already began to lean over. Building of the tower was then stopped for almost a century, untill it was finaly completed in 1275. You have to see this famous tower with your own eyes.

Church of Santa Maria della Spina - The Church of Santa Maria della Spina is situated on the south bank of the river Arno, it was originally even closer to the river but was moved to its current position in 1871 due to fears of flooding. The church is Pisa's finest example of Gothic architecture.

Camposanto Vecchio - This historical site dates back to 1278 and was established as a museum in the early 19th century. It exhibits 14th and 15th century detached frescos, Roman sarcophagi, and statues, sculptures, tombstones, and Medieval and Renaissance architectural elements.

Coccio bar - Found near the Leaning Tower, this small coffee bar is a great place for breakfast and of course a cup of capuccino, which you can enjoy while watching the world go by. The service is great and the prices affordable.

La bottega del gelato - This ice cream bar found at Piazza Garibaldi 11, is a great place to sample some of the famous itallian ice cream. Here you can meet some of the local students, who always frequent this ice cream bar in summer.
