| Poland Travel Guide for backpackers |

| Recovering from the devastation of WWII Poland is re-inventing itself, but nothing could take away from its magnificent countryside with all its diversity and beauty, nor could any one steal or destroy its spirit and culture. In this beautiful old country medieval towns and horse-drawn carts trundling along country lanes co-exist with bright cosmopolitan centres, and the people remain friendly and hospitable while cherishing their rich cultural heritage. |

 |
Warsaw - Reduced to ashes in WWII, Warsaw has risen and rebuilt itself, carefully reconstructing its historical assets. Churches, palaces and galleries line Warsaw's main north-south boulevard, the Royal Way.
Great Masurian Lakes - Great to explore on bike, or tramp, the lake shores in the Masuria area are dotted with towns and places of accommodation.
Krakow - Maybe because it is so full of churches, and had Divine protection, but Krakow survived WWII with no damage and has great architecture still standing as well as a lively determined spirit.
The Tatras - One of the most beautiful areas in Poland, where the high Carpathian Mountains snow clad peaks and sheer rocky cliffs tower over glacial lakes, best visited in spring or autumn when good weather combines with, joy of joy's, few tourists.
Glogowek - Take a step back in time when visiting this small medieval town just as it was way back when, with the same town square, olden time's houses, and church from its early beginnings. |

DAILY BUDGET in POLAND - $30 daily in today's Poland will get you a cheap hotel room, fair to middling restaurant fare, and allow some bus or train travel as well as checking out some museums or other paying attraction, with cheap meals in the region of US$3-5, and inexpensive accommodation about US$8-20 |

The peak tourist season is in July and August, so if you live for sweaty, swarming throngs of humanity pushing, shoving and jostling for the best spots in the resorts and spa's, then don't hang around for the mid-May to June (spring) and September to mid-October (Autumn), when the weather is warm and the country at its most beautiful, and peace reigns again in the Old Country.
Krakow hosts the annual Music in Old Kraków Festival in August, and in September Wroclaw puts on the Wratislavia Cantans. A somewhat livelier and possibly a whole lot more entertaining is the Dominican Fair held in Gdansk over April/May when the streets are filled with fun and activity from what was once a simple medieval fair. |
