Portugal Travel Guide for backpackers

Festivals, sensational beaches, and well within the reach of budget travellers, Portugal was made for the backpacker. The country is also filled with history and smothered in Unesco World Heritage sites, Olive groves and vineyards thrive in the sunshine, and the music is everywhere. Portugal is an easy place to lose your heart in.

Coimbra Lisbon Porto

Lisbon - Imagine sitting at a street cafe tucking into the paella, checking out the cool old time architecture, listening to someone singing a tradition folk fado, and knowing there are still about 50 museums to see, the river to explore and a whole bunch of other cool places to investigate? You'll be imagining Lisbon.

Lagos - Excellent beaches, deep sea diving, golf, when you check out all the facilities in Lagos it becomes clear why it is one of the country's most popular tourist resorts.

Sintra - This beautiful city was the hang out of Lord Byron and Portuguese royalty, and it is a classified UNESCO World Heritage site, with palaces, churches and gorgeous gardens.

Evora - One of the architectural jewels of Portugal, Evora has been around a long time and evidence of its early inhabitation can be seen in the megalithic monuments in the region, and the magnificent architecture of its historic buildings.

Monchique - Set on the forested slopes of the Serra de Monchique, Monchique offers peace and quiet after the crowds, and some great hiking to take in the fantastic views from the top of the Algarve.

DAILY BUDGET in PORTUGAL - Portugal is still a fairly inexpensive country to visit and US$30 is still a possibility for a daily budget, but it would be a tight squeeze with the backpacker having to rely on his own culinary skills and camp under the stars. Traveling with a mate over off-peak season, can cut costs dramatically and bring quite a bit of comfort at US$80 for two, and if you go outside the major tourist destinations, life becomes even easier.

If you are energized by crowds and enjoy the hurly-burly of peak season then make a turn around mid-July to September when everybody comes to the party. The Easter period though, brings sensational processions and partying with Carnaval happening for the six weeks leading to Easter, and big names in the music world, like Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Guns n' Roses, Metallica, Sting and Britney Spears, perform at the annual Rock in Rio Lisboa, in May/June. In Golega The Feira de Sao Martinho is put on over November, for devotees of bullfights, horses, and riding contests.
